Following its departure from Destiny 2, the mysterious force known as the Darkness has moved on to Bungie’s Marathon. Starting next week, the Dire Marsh area will feature a nighttime version, and the developers are intentionally creating a scary, horror-inspired atmosphere, as hinted at in the game’s trailer.
A recent blog post explains that Night Marsh is designed to be a more deliberate and suspenseful experience than Day Marsh. It’s meant to feel like a survival horror game, featuring fewer players and additional difficulties caused by the darkness and the dangers lurking within.
One of the biggest hurdles is limited visibility. Luckily, new tools like Flashlights, Vector Rounds (which create bright, revealing light on impact and even show enemies), and Vector Grenades (for spotting nearby dangers) help address this. Darksight scopes also give you a temporary, highlighted view of the world when you aim. This creates a tense experience, forcing you to carefully check your surroundings, stay mobile, and repeat the process.
If you’re still stuck, signal flares can help. They’ll let people know where you are, and they’re one of the brightest ways to get attention in the sky.
Bungie has been talking about improved security from the UESC, and here’s what that looks like: you’ll now earn rewards, called Certs, by destroying enemy bots. These Certs are key to unlocking loot from Network Towers, but they also let enemies escape, so don’t get too carried away with greed and risk getting caught off guard.
Regarding those unusual creatures you’ve been seeing, if you’re feeling brave, head to the upper floors of Complex Control with your Certs. Open the doors and investigate for yourself. If you make it out alive, you might even find some valuable rewards.
As a huge fan, I’m really glad Bungie is thinking about keeping everyone together! They’re going to switch between the day and night versions of Dire Marsh every 90 minutes to make sure people aren’t spread too thin between the new Duos queue and the upcoming PvE stuff. Luckily, for the first week of the season – which is when Marathon is going to be free for everyone to play – we’ll have both versions available all the time. And if you’re checking out Contracts, keep an eye out for MIDA and Traxus – they might have some missions that take place in the dark!
The second season of Marathon, titled NIGHTFALL, begins on June 2nd. The development team will share more information soon, so keep an eye out for updates.
