Marvel Comics is undergoing a leadership change. Dan Buckley, who has led Marvel’s comics and franchise divisions for almost 30 years, is retiring. Brad Winderbaum, a key executive from Marvel Studios, will take over as Head of Marvel Television, Animation, Comics & Franchise. Joining him is David Abdo, coming from Disney, who will be the General Manager for Comics & Franchise. C.B. Cebulski will continue as Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comics, reporting directly to Winderbaum.
According to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, Brad’s talent for creative leadership combined with David’s extensive experience in operations and digital advancements will be a great asset as Marvel continues its comic book tradition for the next 90 years. Brad is known for successfully leading creative teams and developing engaging stories that connect with fans globally, and David has a history of strong operational skills and driving growth. Feige expressed his enthusiasm for their collaboration.
Brand Winderbaum Has a Solid Track Record With Television (Which Could Bode Well For Comics)

Fans of Marvel’s TV shows already know Brad Winderbaum. He’s been in charge of Marvel’s live-action and animated series on Disney+ for years, and has been an executive producer on hits like Agatha: All Along, Hawkeye, Loki Season 2, X-Men ’97, and Daredevil: Born Again. Considering how well those shows have done, Winderbaum’s move to oversee the comics could be a positive change. He’s guided some fantastic Marvel series—particularly X-Men ’97—that are known for their strong stories. Bringing that same storytelling approach to the comics could create a closer connection between the comics and the shows and movies fans love, potentially attracting a new audience to the comic books.
The leadership change has sparked some worry among fans. They’re concerned that the comics might start to reflect the storylines of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) too much, instead of the MCU drawing inspiration from the comics – or, ideally, remaining creatively independent. This concern isn’t unfounded, as there’s been a growing trend of trying to connect the two more closely in recent years.
Fans will have to wait and see how this all unfolds, as there will be a period of adjustment with this change. However, reports indicate Buckley will stay with Marvel to help with the transition, remaining in a leadership role through mid-2027.
