Marvel Just Paved The Way For Black Widow’s Avengers: Doomsday Appearance

The first official trailer for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has been released, giving fans a glimpse of Black Widow’s appearance in the film. With the premiere still eight months away, Marvel Studios is beginning to heavily promote this major movie. While some short clips had already been shown, confirming Chris Evans’ return as Captain America and other team combinations, the full trailer was unveiled at CinemaCon 2026 by Kevin Feige, the Russo brothers, and Robert Downey Jr.

Marvel Studios hasn’t released the footage from the event to the public yet, which has disappointed fans, as it was specifically shown to theater owners. While the official trailer isn’t available, descriptions have surfaced detailing the scenes, including a team-up between Thor and Captain America against Doctor Doom, and several first-time interactions between heroes. Interestingly, a quick moment in the Avengers: Doomsday trailer hints at a potential return for Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, five years after her last appearance in Black Widow.

Mystique’s Shape-Shifting Ability Allows Avengers: Doomsday To Feature Black Widow

The trailer for Avengers: Doomsday finally shows the X-Men meeting the Avengers and other Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes, something fans have been anticipating for years. However, instead of instantly becoming allies, tensions flare up, creating more excitement. A particularly striking scene features Mystique, played by Rebecca Romijn, shapeshifting into Yelena Belova and battling Florence Pugh’s character. This fight is unique because Yelena is essentially fighting a version of herself, reminiscent of the Captain America vs. Captain America fight in Avengers: Endgame, and it also provides a cameo appearance from Natasha Romanoff.

To further upset Yelena, Mystique could shapeshift into Scarlett Johansson’s original Black Widow. Florence Pugh’s character has been deeply affected by her relationship with Black Widow and her loss in Avengers: Endgame. Marvel has used a similar tactic before – a deleted scene in Thor: The Dark World showed Loki transforming into Captain America. Bringing this back in Avengers: Doomsday would be particularly impactful, given Black Widow’s death in Endgame. This would allow Johansson to participate without diminishing the significance of her sacrifice on Vormir.

In 2025, Scarlett Johansson stated she wouldn’t be appearing in Avengers: Doomsday and had no future plans with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While that may still be the case, Marvel Studios is known for keeping its projects, particularly big events like Avengers: Doomsday, tightly under wraps. Given the key people involved, it’s possible Kevin Feige could have persuaded her to make a quick appearance.
