The initial trailer for The Punisher: One Last Kill has fans buzzing, thanks to a specific scene. The trailer concluded with Frank Castle shooting someone on a street, in front of a restaurant. However, it wasn’t the shooting itself that caught people’s attention, but the restaurant’s name: “Gnucci.” This name will be instantly recognizable to longtime readers of The Punisher comics, especially those who followed the stories by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon from the early 2000s, as it immediately evokes memories of the character Ma Gnucci.
The latest trailer reveals Frank Castle is struggling with trauma and haunted by memories of fallen comrades from his military past. While he’s clearly battling internal demons, the appearance of the Gnucci restaurant suggests Ma Gnucci will be the main antagonist. Fans are now wondering how closely the show will follow the comics’ depiction of the Punisher’s conflict with her.
MCU Unlikely to Take Ma Gnucci to Her Comic Book Fate

Ma Gnucci first appeared in the Punisher comic book series in 2000 and was killed off less than a year later, in issue #12. Though her time was short, that’s actually a relatively long run for a Punisher villain. Even a well-known enemy like Barracuda met his end quickly. The Punisher doesn’t hesitate, and rarely allows villains to reappear, let alone stick around for months. Ma Gnucci was a particularly tough opponent for him.
Isabella ‘Ma’ Gnucci led a powerful crime family, and when the Punisher targeted her, he didn’t just aim for her – he destroyed her entire organization. He killed her sons and brother, driving Ma Gnucci to seek revenge against Castle. The method he used, however, was particularly brutal and might be too extreme for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to depict. He lured her into a trap at the Central Park Zoo, where she was severely mauled by polar bears. Though she survived, she lost all four limbs and became even more determined to kill Frank Castle.
The conflict with Rhus culminated in a brutal showdown where the Punisher eliminated eighty of her soldiers in just two weeks. She even deployed a dangerous Russian operative (played by Kevin Nash in the 2004 Punisher film), but Frank Castle responded by returning with the operative’s head. He then set her house ablaze and trapped her inside, leaving her to burn. This act was exceptionally violent, going beyond simply killing her – he intentionally inflicted pain and devastation. It’s unclear if the Marvel Cinematic Universe will portray the Punisher this ruthlessly, but Ma Gnucci suggests her character will introduce a truly dark and dangerous element to The Punisher: One Last Kill.
