Evangeline Lilly, known for her roles in films like Ant-Man and The Avengers: Endgame, as well as The Hobbit trilogy and the TV show LOST, announced her retirement from acting in 2024, though she left the door open for a possible return. In May 2025, she was injured in an accident on the beach, hitting her head on a rock after fainting. Now, Lilly has shared with fans that the injury has caused long-term health issues.
Lilly recently shared an update on Instagram about her health, explaining that scans revealed damage from a previous head injury. She said many people had asked about her condition and the results of her brain scans, and unfortunately, the scans showed decreased function in most areas of her brain. She believes this damage is related to her traumatic brain injury, and possibly other issues as well. She shared this update as she enters the Year of the Horse.
Lilly explained that she’s working with doctors to understand and address a recent health issue. While she anticipates a difficult recovery process – feeling like she’s constantly working hard – she’s trying to stay positive. She also noted that her cognitive challenges, stemming from a facial injury, have surprisingly forced her to slow down and enjoy a more peaceful end to 2025.
Lilly’s announcement caught the attention of her Marvel colleagues, who sent messages of support. Michelle Pfeiffer, who played her on-screen mother Janet Van Dyne in the Ant-Man and Wasp films, wrote a comment calling Lilly a ‘warrior’ and expressing confidence in her strength. David Dastmalchian, a fellow cast member in all three movies, simply replied with three heart emojis.
Evangeline Lilly first appeared as Hope van Dyne in 2015’s Ant-Man and went on to be in all three movies, including Avengers: Endgame. Considering she announced her retirement from acting nearly two years ago, many didn’t expect her to return for the next Avengers films, Doomsday and Secret Wars. However, her character’s story isn’t necessarily over. While Lilly likely won’t appear on screen, Hope will probably be mentioned, especially since Paul Rudd is returning as Scott Lang and a recent report suggests Kathryn Newton will reprise her role as Cassie Lang. It would be surprising if Scott and Cassie didn’t acknowledge Hope’s role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and this could give Marvel a chance to provide a satisfying conclusion to her story.
