The influence of “Imperial” continues to resonate throughout the Marvel Universe, leading to a transformation of the Guardians of the Galaxy. In the current restructuring of Marvel’s cosmic landscape, “Imperial,” a four-issue event series penned by Jonathan Hickman and illustrated by Iban Coello and Federico Vicentini, plays a significant role. The epic narrative of “Imperial” is so expansive that it necessitates more than just one event series. Marvel has planned five standalone issues titled “Imperial War,” featuring She-Hulk, Black Panther, Charles Xavier, Lilandra Nermani, and Nova. With four already announced, we’re eager to learn about the fifth one.
Title 1 of “Cosmic Conflict: Imperial Protectors” arrives in October, penned by Dan Abnett (known for “Annihilation” and “War of the Kings”) and illustrated by Cory Smith (famous for “Nova” and “Fantastic Four”). Abnett, a seasoned cosmic storyteller, has previously crafted events that have brought the Guardians of the Galaxy back into the limelight. In “Cosmic Conflict: Imperial Protectors”, he plans to repeat this success, showcasing characters like Captain Marvel, Gamora, and Darkhawk. Although not explicitly mentioned, Cosmic Ghost Rider and Adam Warlock can be seen on the one-shot’s cover, courtesy of Francesco Mortarino.
The five standalone stories known as the “Imperial War” series are crucial segments in the broader “Imperial” storyline, setting the stage for an upcoming series in this expanding cosmic environment. Currently, Gamora is the sole member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, although they don’t yet have an official team name. A possible hint might be found in the title, suggesting the “Imperial Guardians.” Additionally, the narrative includes Star-Lord and Nova collaborating to explore the murder of galactic leaders.
Abnett expressed his delight to return to spinning cosmic tales as part of the Imperial event. He reminisced about the enjoyable times he had with Nova and the Guardians in the past, and mentioned that Jonathan is masterminding an epic-scale SF story filled with character development, drama, and action – exactly what Abnett enjoys. He described it as quite a thrilling ride, stating that the galaxy and the Guardians will never be the same after this!
