Florence Pugh is well-known for her roles in big franchises like Marvel and Dune, but she’s been a working actress for ten years, building a strong career. Florence Pugh recently revealed on The Louis Theroux Podcast that there’s one movie from her career she regrets making. The topic came up unexpectedly when Louis Theroux mentioned he’d seen her 2018 horror film, Malevolent, simply as a viewer, not for the interview. He even complimented her performance, which led Pugh to admit she wishes she hadn’t done the film.

Florence Pugh appeared in the 2018 film as Angela Sayers, one half of a pair of siblings who pretend to investigate paranormal activity. Their latest ‘investigation’ at a remote house, however, leads to unexpected consequences. Although Pugh has openly disliked the film, it wasn’t a complete failure. It debuted on Netflix and currently holds a 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – not great, but certainly not the worst score it could have received.
Florence Pugh admitted she’s never seen the film Malevolent, calling it a movie she regrets making. She explained that everyone has at least one project like that – something they took on early in their career, often for financial reasons, only to realize it wasn’t a good fit. She did the film when she was young and needed money, thinking it would be a good opportunity, but it turned out to be a disappointing experience.
Theroux began describing the movie’s storyline, but Pugh cut him off with a laugh, suggesting they discuss different films instead.
Although Florence Pugh admitted she regrets taking the role in Malevolent, she used that experience to discuss how she chooses projects now. The Oscar nominee explained she doesn’t actively seek out scary roles, but instead looks for scripts with elements that challenge and frighten her as an actress.
Florence Pugh says when she reads a script, she looks for a challenge – a moment that pushes her outside her comfort zone. It’s not the scary content itself that excites her, but the question of whether she can actually pull off the role. She explains that when she feels a wave of nervousness about a scene – if it’s something she’s never tried or isn’t sure she can emotionally handle – that’s usually a sign she’s going to accept the part.
It could really be anything, similar to what happened with Thunderbolts. I did a big stunt – jumping from the second-tallest building in the world – and we were committed to doing it regardless. It was incredible to be able to pull that off. I’d never done anything like it before, especially while also acting, so it was a really demanding experience.
