A game from Marvel that’s flown under the radar may be coming to the new Nintendo Switch 2. While Insomniac’s Spider-Man games and the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine are usually the focus, a 2021 release from Eidos-Montreal deserves attention if it’s included in the Switch 2’s lineup.
Recently, Taiwan’s game rating board listed Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy for the unreleased Nintendo Switch 2. Now, the ESRB has also included a Switch 2 version among the platforms the game is available on. While Guardians of the Galaxy received positive reviews when it launched, it didn’t sell as well as Square Enix had hoped. Over the past four years, the game, developed by Eidos-Montreal, has maintained a strong reputation thanks to its compelling story and fun gameplay.
Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy For Switch 2 Listed By ESRB
Game leaks through rating boards happen fairly often, particularly when it comes to ports like this one. The recent ESRB listing mainly confirms the game is coming to the Switch 2, but doesn’t reveal anything we didn’t already know – the rating remains a ‘T’. Taiwan’s rating board, TESRI, also doesn’t offer any new details, and even notes that a release date hasn’t been announced yet.
The ESRB listing for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy doesn’t include the initial Switch version, which might be a mistake. However, it could be because that Switch version was a cloud-based game – meaning it needed an internet connection to stream and couldn’t be played directly on the console. This omission may suggest that the upcoming version for the Switch 2 will run directly on the console itself, which is probable given that the original game was released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
GOTG Is An S-Tier Superhero Game
While often overshadowed by popular superhero games like the Batman: Arkham series and Marvel’s Spider-Man trilogy, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is a surprisingly great experience. Released after the disappointing Marvel’s Avengers, it overcame initial skepticism to deliver a genuinely touching story that takes place across a variety of alien planets, including well-known Marvel locations like Knowhere. Star-Lord and the Guardians really deliver!
The game’s disappointing sales appear to have caused difficulties for Eidos-Montreal, most recently resulting in layoffs. While Guardians of the Galaxy was a strong title deserving a sequel – which now seems unlikely – the cancellation of a new Deus Ex game at the studio is particularly unfortunate. A potential release on the Nintendo Switch 2 might offer the game a second chance, but it could be a long time before we see another Guardians of the Galaxy game.
