Even though the second season of Daredevil: Born Again recently finished, Marvel fans had another exciting release to look forward to: The Punisher: One Last Kill, the newest of Marvel Studios’ Special Presentations. This special, which comes before Frank Castle appears in this summer’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, really explores his character and delivers the intense, violent action fans love. One Last Kill definitely lives up to its mature rating with some very graphic scenes, and one moment in particular has upset some viewers.
After the premiere of The Punisher: One Last Kill on Disney+, a clip of a visual effects shot began circulating online. The scene shows Frank Castle falling onto a rooftop, and it’s obvious a CGI double was used for the impact. This looked noticeably different from the rest of the show’s realistic action sequences. Many viewers compared the CGI negatively to graphics from the PlayStation 3 and 4, with some pointing out the character resembled Joel from The Last of Us. Here’s a look at some of the reactions people have been sharing.
Despite Questionable CGI Moment, One Last Kill Features Great Punisher Action
We previously pointed out a noticeable CGI mistake in The Punisher: One Last Kill – it really stood out. While the clip isn’t great, it’s easy to see why it’s become popular online. The way the characters moved and the textures on Frank’s clothes clearly showed it was computer-generated. Good visual effects should blend seamlessly into the scene and make it more believable. When they’re this obvious, it breaks the viewer’s immersion. This scene, despite the CGI issue, was part of an otherwise thrilling action sequence where Frank fights enemies on a rooftop.
Marvel has faced CGI criticism before, most recently with the visual effects in She-Hulk. It’s important to remember that creating these effects is incredibly challenging. VFX artists often work under strict deadlines, rushing to finish shots so projects can be released on time. Given more time, the team working on One Last Kill could have made this particular scene truly impressive.
A short clip from the rooftop scene is circulating online, but don’t let it turn you off from watching the full special, One Last Kill. That single moment doesn’t reflect the rest of the action. Fans of the Punisher will likely enjoy it, especially the latter half, which features more intense violence. Director Reinaldo Marcus Green fully embraces the character’s mature themes and delivers plenty of impactful action. As fans wonder how the Punisher will be portrayed in the upcoming Brand New Day, One Last Kill shows that Marvel isn’t afraid to deliver gritty content when appropriate.
It will be interesting to see if Marvel fixes the CGI in One Last Kill. They’ve improved visual effects in releases before – for example, the Blu-ray of Alien: Romulus has enhanced visuals for the character of Rook, and even corrected mistakes, like the infamous ‘jeans guy’ in The Mandalorian. However, making these changes costs extra money and time, so it’s uncertain if Disney will invest in that for One Last Kill.
