The new Masters of the Universe movie has excited fans with its character designs and costumes, which closely resemble the original cartoon series. This commitment to the source material has continued with every preview, including recent footage shown at CinemaCon featuring Skeletor’s iconic laugh. Director Travis Knight has explained that the film remains very faithful to the classic cartoon, though with one significant update.
As a big fan of He-Man, I was really interested to hear director Travis Knight talk about the visual design choices in the new movie. He explained that whenever the team faced a design challenge, they always looked back to the original Filmation cartoon for inspiration. Even though they wanted a modern, cinematic look, they made sure to include lots of nods to the source material – things like the color palette, and even a quick glimpse of the spirit of Grayskull when Adam first transforms. It’s a subtle moment, but it’s there! He really emphasized how committed they were to honoring the original throughout the whole film, which as a longtime fan, I really appreciate.
Masters of the Universe Director Reveals One Major Change From The Cartoon

Many of the costumes closely resemble their original cartoon versions, but they’ve been updated to look great on screen. Characters like Skeletor, Man-At-Arms, Teela, and Trap Jaw strike a good balance between staying true to the source material and feeling modern. However, the creators admitted they weren’t able to incorporate every detail from the cartoon when designing He-Man’s look.
As a big fan of the original material, we really tried to stay true to it whenever we could. But sometimes, things just didn’t fit with the overall look and feel we were going for in the movie. I remember a huge discussion about He-Man’s outfit, specifically! The art, production design, and costume teams all wondered if we could actually do the furry hot pants and boots. Ultimately, we decided it just wouldn’t work, and we had to make some changes.
We initially considered a few ideas, then started thinking about different directions we could take the design. At one point, the costume designer envisioned a look inspired by Jim Morrison, complete with leather pants. Ultimately, we settled on a design that paid homage to the classic He-Man costume while updating it for a modern audience. Instead of the traditional furry shorts, the character now wears a gladiator-style skirt, but the overall shape and feel of the original costume remain recognizable, just presented in a new way.
The new He-Man design still strongly resembles the original, and it’s instantly recognizable even with a few changes, like the removal of fur on his boots. The same is true for other characters like Mekaneck, Ram-Man, and Beast Man. We’re excited to see all these beloved figures finally appear in a movie!
Masters of the Universe is set to hit theaters on June 5th, 2026.
