MCU Fans Furious After Controversial Change to Thunderbolts* on Disney+

The fresh lineup of Marvel heroes is all set to premiere on Disney+ towards the end of this month, with the Thunderbolts team taking center stage for their streaming debut. In anticipation of this exciting new addition to the platform, Disney+ revealed a stunning new poster showcasing the band of misfits. However, the online reaction has been heated, as the poster omits one character, despite them having limited screen time, and removes the weapons from all characters. This unexpected move raises questions among fans, who are puzzled about why these changes were made to the promotional image for the upcoming Disney+ release.

The revised poster, displayed below, showcases numerous alterations. The most notable adjustment is the absence of Taskmaster/Antonia Dreykov, who played a significant role in the film’s promotion but had a minor (and somewhat contentious) part in the actual movie. Initially, keeping Taskmaster in promotional materials was intended to prevent spoilers for fans, which makes it surprising that Disney+ chose to eliminate her entirely from marketing, considering many viewers haven’t watched the film yet. Another modification involves Yelena and Bucky’s weapons. In the initial poster, they were depicted with guns, but in the new version, their hands are empty while maintaining the same positions, suggesting they might be holding an unseen object.

It’s possible that some might suggest the adjustment in marketing for Thunderbolts* was aimed at making it appear more family-friendly. However, Disney+ has shifted away from a strictly family-friendly approach by incorporating mature content such as Deadpool and Defenders series. Consequently, one may question why there’s a need to alter the marketing strategy for Thunderbolts*, given its positive critical reception and reputation as one of Marvel Studios’ finest films. Instead of focusing on a family-friendly image, one would expect the emphasis to be on critics’ praise, as Thunderbolts* is often hailed as one of Marvel’s best productions.

In a slight shift, but not one that significantly alters things, the new poster has made a notable change. Instead of the Thunderbolts being positioned on a backdrop suggesting a battle scene as in the original, they now stand out against a plain yellow canvas in the updated version. Interestingly, this solid yellow background is consistent with the primary color scheme used for the film’s marketing, even extending to its home release promotions. While it might seem unusual, the vibrant hue catches the eye effectively, whereas the original backdrop could have been considered somewhat distracting. However, the bright yellow does make Bucky’s odd hand pose and lack of weapon more noticeable, unfortunately.

Regardless if you’re fond of the new promotion for the Thunderbolts movie or not, it’s set to debut on Disney+ on August 27th, Wednesday. If you haven’t yet managed to watch one of Marvel Studios’ finest productions from recent years, remember to tune in to Thunderbolts later this month right at your home.
