Marvel Studios has renewed one of its popular Disney+ series, allowing them to resolve a major plot point left hanging. Starting with WandaVision in 2021, these shows demonstrated how well comic book stories translate to television. Series like WandaVision, Loki, What If…?, Moon Knight, and Wonder Man have proven Marvel can deliver compelling narratives on the small screen, exploring stories that wouldn’t quite work in a movie theater.
In 2025, Marvel launched an unusual animated series called Marvel Zombies, a spin-off of What If…? Like its predecessor, Marvel Zombies was set on an alternate Earth, but this time a zombie apocalypse had decimated most of the heroes. The first season ended with a surprising cliffhanger, but fans can rejoice – Marvel is bringing the show back for a second season to finish the story.
Marvel Zombies is Returning For a Second Season

The first season of Marvel Zombies continued the story that started in What If…?, where a zombie outbreak occurred among Earth’s superheroes. While the core concept – that zombies retained their intelligence, powers, and a hunger for human flesh – remained, the show featured a different set of heroes and villains than the original storyline.
I was really fascinated by how the Disney+ Marvel Zombies series took a different approach from the original comics. Instead of a whole bunch of infected heroes just trying to spread the zombie virus, this version made Scarlet Witch the central figure – she wasn’t just one of the zombies, she controlled them all! And it was so clever how they brought in characters from the ‘What If…?’ series, like the hilarious image of Ant-Man’s head in a jar, alongside Spider-Man and others like Red Guardian and Yelena. Honestly, turning Namor into a zombie was a truly terrifying idea – a villain I definitely didn’t expect!
The most compelling aspect of the first season of Marvel Zombies was the introduction of a new, close-knit group of friends – Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel), Kate Bishop (Hawkeye), and Riri Williams (Ironheart) – as they struggled to survive. Even though not everyone made it, the series reinforced what many Marvel fans already believe: Kamala Khan is the strongest new character in the MCU and should lead the Avengers after Avengers: Secret Wars. Ms. Marvel was truly the emotional center of Marvel Zombies, and her story will continue in the second season, picking up after the season’s surprising ending.
Marvel Zombies Can Wrap Up Season 1 Cliffhanger

The first season of Marvel Zombies concluded with a shocking cliffhanger, but it felt fitting as many horror stories end on a bleak note. The final moments were particularly disturbing: Kamala Khan surrendered to the Scarlet Witch, now the Queen of the Dead, choosing to stop fighting in hopes of ending the zombie war. As a result, Kamala was transported to a different reality where things had returned to normal, reuniting her with Kate Bishop and Ironheart.
It seemed like the battle was over, but it was all a trick. Kamala realized the zombies were still attacking, and nothing had actually changed – the Queen of the Dead had fooled her into giving up. Like most zombie stories, the situation appeared hopeless, with the zombies winning as they usually do, but a glimmer of hope remained. That hope came when Kamala heard Ironheart calling for her, proving at least one friend had survived – and hadn’t been seen dying on screen – and was still battling.
Season 2 of Marvel Zombies could build on the previous season and, at the very least, bring Ms. Marvel and Ironheart back together to battle the Queen of the Dead and her zombie forces. While a truly happy ending isn’t likely, Kamala and Riri need to find a way to defeat Wanda Maximoff and stop her control. Even if zombies still roam the Earth and zombified heroes continue to hunt for victims, it’s important to see these two young heroes triumph over the main villain before continuing the larger story.
