Several actors have successfully transitioned from DC to Marvel roles. Ryan Reynolds’ career was stalled by his performance in the poorly received *Green Lantern*, but he found massive success playing Deadpool, allowing him to playfully acknowledge his past missteps. Josh Brolin also faced criticism for his role in *Jonah Hex*, but Marvel recognized his talent and cast him as the powerful villain Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, the trend seems to be reversing. As the MCU’s popularity wanes, actors are increasingly interested in joining DC projects, particularly if they have a prior relationship with DC Studios head James Gunn.
Several actors who have worked with James Gunn on Marvel projects, like Bradley Cooper and Pom Klementieff, have small parts in the new *Superman* movie. Meanwhile, another *Guardians of the Galaxy* cast member is trying out for the role of the Joker in the DC Universe. While they’d be a great addition to the actors who’ve played the character, they might be a better fit for a different DC villain.
Chukwudi Iwuji Sees Something Special in the Joker

Chukwudi Iwuji is no stranger to superhero roles. He played Clemson Murn in Season 1 of *Peacemaker*, a character who turned out to be more than just a government agent – he was secretly controlled by an alien called a Butterfly, trying to stop its race from invading Earth. Though Murn didn’t last long, he made a strong impression, much like Iwuji’s latest role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In *Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3*, Iwuji plays the villain, the High Evolutionary, the creator of Rocket and many other creatures. Driven by the goal of creating the perfect being, the High Evolutionary is a lonely figure, a trait Iwuji also recognizes in other villains.
Iwuji shared his thoughts on the Joker, Batman’s greatest foe, revealing a fascination with the character. He noted that while the Joker is undeniably crazy, there’s a wide spectrum to how that madness can be portrayed. He was particularly moved by Heath Ledger’s performance, specifically the Joker’s habit of constantly changing the story of his father. Iwuji wondered why the character did this, concluding it stemmed from deep loneliness and a need to hide it behind a flamboyant persona.
Iwuji would be excellent as the Joker, clearly understanding the character’s deep desire for acceptance. However, there’s another role he should consider – a completely fresh opportunity where he could truly make the part his own, as it hasn’t been played before.
Brainiac Needs an Actor of Chukwudi Iwuji’s Level

James Gunn hinted that Brainiac might be the force uniting Superman and Lex Luthor in the upcoming film. This makes sense, as a challenge like Brainiac would likely require a combination of intelligence and strength to overcome. Brainiac is unique because he’s completely logical and unemotional, a type of character that actor David Iwuji hasn’t played before. However, Iwuji’s strong performance in Marvel films has led fans to suggest him for the role, proving his ability to handle complex characters.
In a recent interview where he also talked about the Joker, the actor addressed rumors about potentially playing Brainiac. He said he’d enthusiastically accept the role if director James Gunn asked him. He admitted seeing the online buzz and finding the character appealing, adding that he’d ‘jump at’ the opportunity if it was offered.
Now that Iwuji has expressed interest, Gunn should arrange a call with him quickly. While it might seem soon to consider Iwuji for another large DC role, Michael Rooker appears in many projects without issue. Although the obvious choice isn’t always right, everything suggests Iwuji would be perfect as Brainiac.
Man of Tomorrow hits theaters on July 9, 2027.
