Before becoming famous in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a popular MCU actor starred in a well-loved romantic comedy from the 2000s that’s now available on Netflix. Netflix has been adding a lot of new content this month, and this classic rom-com is one of the latest additions, just before a planned remake.
Need a feel-good movie? Check out 13 Going on 30, now streaming on Netflix! This popular romantic comedy, starring Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo, originally came out in 2004 – before Ruffalo became famous as The Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While he’s now widely known for playing the giant, green superhero, 13 Going on 30 still has a special place in many fans’ hearts. Interestingly, Netflix just added the movie shortly after announcing plans for a reboot starring Emily Bader and Logan Lerman, with Jennifer Garner helping to produce it.
Mark Ruffalo’s 13 Going on 30 Is a Quintessential, Feel-Good Romantic Comedy
After the popular romantic comedies of the 1990s, the 2000s kept the trend going with films like 13 Going on 30. The movie features Jennifer Garner as Jenna Rink, a 13-year-old who wishes to be “thirty, flirty, and thriving” to avoid the struggles of being a teenager. Her wish comes true, and she magically wakes up as a successful 30-year-old magazine editor in 2004, having skipped 17 years of her life. Now, she has to figure out how to be an adult, rebuild her friendship with her childhood best friend, Matty (Mark Ruffalo), and learn that being a grown-up isn’t as simple as being popular – it takes compassion and effort.
13 Going on 30 is a wonderfully charming and rewatchable romantic comedy. It taps into the universal feeling of wanting to fast-forward past the awkwardness of being a teenager and jump straight into adulthood. The movie explores themes of self-acceptance and cherishing your childhood, all wrapped up in a nostalgic and heartwarming story. Memorable scenes, like the iconic “Thriller” dance, and the fantastic chemistry between Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo make it a truly enjoyable film. It was also well-received overall, currently holding a 65% rating from critics and a 71% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
What’s New on Netflix?
Netflix is off to a great start in May! Along with popular favorites like 13 Going on 30, the service added several other movies on May 1st, including The Breakfast Club, Burn After Reading, Eat Pray Love, and The Proposal. They’ve continued adding new content, recently releasing a new adaptation of Lord of the Flies, and have even more exciting titles planned for the rest of the month.
