Following the successful reintroduction of Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios plans a similar approach for the upcoming X-Men film. After the Multiverse Saga concludes with Avengers: Secret Wars, the MCU will move forward by introducing the main versions of the X-Men mutants from Earth-616.
Jake Schreier, the director of Marvel’s upcoming X-Men film, shared his approach to the movie. In an interview with Collider, he explained that their primary goal is to “make one great movie” but also to have a broader vision for where the story could go. He emphasized focusing on unexplored aspects of the Marvel Comics universe and considering various possibilities for future installments.
Our main focus is always making a fantastic movie. But even as we’re developing the story, we’re constantly brainstorming potential directions. We look at what’s been done in the comics, what hasn’t been explored enough, and how we can incorporate fresh ideas. We also consider unique paths we could take to keep things original. These possibilities are always part of the conversation.
I’m really excited about how Marvel is handling Spider-Man in the MCU! They did something similar to what they’re doing now when they first brought Tom Holland on board. He debuted in Captain America: Civil War back in 2016, and then got his own movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming, the next year. What I loved about Homecoming was that they didn’t just retread old ground – Peter was up against completely new villains, like Michael Keaton as Vulture. It looks like they’re continuing that trend in his fourth movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, where he’ll be facing off against Michael Mando’s Scorpion for the very first time, which is awesome!
Marvel Studios is starting work on its first X-Men movie, which will be part of the seventh phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Jake Schreier, who is directing the Thunderbolts movie, will direct. The script is currently being revised by Lee Sung Jin (known for Beef) and Joanna Calo (from The Bear). Fans likely won’t see the film in theaters until 2028 at the earliest.
What Could Happen in MCU’s X-Men Movie?

The upcoming X-Men movie from Marvel Studios is generating a lot of excitement as it will introduce a fresh team of mutants following the appearances of established mutants in the Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars films. Fans can expect this new team to encounter challenges never before seen in any of the previous X-Men movies made by 20th Century Fox.
There’s talk that Cyclops and Jean Grey will lead the next X-Men team, giving their relationship a more detailed story than what viewers saw with the previous actors, James Marsden and Famke Janssen. Alongside them, familiar faces like Beast, Jubilee, Professor X, and Morph are likely to appear, though Wolverine might not be a major focus at the beginning.
The next installment of the X-Men story is reportedly developing three key villains: Bolivar Trask, his Sentinels, and Nathaniel Essex, also known as Mr. Sinister. While Trask and the Sentinels appeared in the 2014 film X-Men: Days of Future Past, Mr. Sinister hasn’t been seen in live-action since X-Men ’97 Season 1. This would introduce a fresh and exciting threat for the team as part of the Marvel Studios universe.
Marvel might handle Magneto differently than in previous adaptations. They could initially portray him as an ally to the X-Men before he becomes a villain, and they could draw inspiration from his portrayal in the animated series X-Men ’97 to develop his storyline for live-action movies.
No matter the specifics, this opens the door for a fresh take on the X-Men and other mutants, integrating them into the Marvel Universe alongside characters like the Avengers and Fantastic Four in a way we haven’t seen before.
