Media Molecule’s Next Game Reportedly Has “Open-World Content,” Per Designer’s Portfolio

It’s been almost three years since Media Molecule ended support for Dreams and announced in 2024 that its next project would be a new IP. While there’s been nary a peep on what to expect, MP1st has reportedly discovered a senior environment designer’s portfolio for an “unannounced project” and “new IP” that indicated the inclusion of “open-world content.”

These designers don’t just create the overall vision for open-world content; they also handle key aspects of level creation, including blocking out major locations and designing moment-to-moment gameplay. They’re in charge of designing resource gathering, and they provide feedback on the work of other level designers. Importantly, they coordinate with a wide range of teams – including other designers, technical experts, programmers, artists, and production staff – to ensure everything works together seamlessly.

Just because a game has “open-world content” doesn’t automatically mean it fits into a specific genre. Media Molecule might be using these features to create a more classic 3D platformer, for example.

It’s difficult to know what’s happening with the project, as details are scarce. We know it’s intended to be a game, not a creative platform like Dreams, and definitely not a sequel. Given recent layoffs at PlayStation Studios in October 2023 and rumors of a potential closure earlier this year, it’s natural to question the studio’s current situation.

We might hear news about a new project at the State of Play event on June 2nd, depending on how far along it is. The showcase, which will last over an hour, will definitely feature Marvel’s Wolverine and possibly the long-awaited God of War spin-off starring Faye. According to insider NateTheHate, there will be other exclusive game announcements as well. While many expect to see Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic, Media Molecule could also reveal something unexpected. Keep an eye out for more details!
