Be warned, this article contains spoilers for season 2 of The Pitt! Dr. Mel King went through a lot of emotional ups and downs in The Pitt season 2, and Taylor Dearden, who plays her, hopes her character will have an easier time in the future.
In the first season of the HBO Max medical drama, Dr. King was presented as a talented and promising second-year resident, highly regarded by Dr. Robby, played by Noah Wyle. What many of her colleagues didn’t know was that Mel was navigating her career while also being neurodivergent and the main caregiver for her autistic sister, Becca.
Season 2 of The Pitt began with Dr. King preoccupied with an upcoming legal deposition. She and Dr. Ellis were being sued by the mother of a patient who had measles, and the lawsuit was against the hospital. Adding to the stress, Becca arrived at the emergency department, where Dr. Langdon diagnosed her with a UTI. This led Mel to discover Becca has a boyfriend and won’t be celebrating the Fourth of July with her sister.
The season 2 finale of The Pitt, “9:00 P.M.”, brought everything to a climax when Mel discovered the malpractice lawsuit wasn’t over and she’d have to testify again. However, it wasn’t all bad for Dr. King. Langdon offered her support while she dealt with being apart from her sister during the holidays, and she even received a fun invitation from Isa Briones’ character, Dr. Santos, to go out for drinks. They unwound from the day by belting out Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know” at karaoke.
Before the season ended, Taylor Dearden spoke with Grant Hermanns from ScreenRant about The Pitt season 2. She discussed Mel’s more emotional storyline this season, how it was a new and challenging acting experience, and what she hopes will happen with the character in future seasons.
Dearden Had To Be Reminded Mel Was Having A Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
Though the first season touched on Mel’s feelings, particularly with her sister, season 2, The Pitt, has really tested her. She’s dealing with a potential career crisis because of a lawsuit, and she’s also worried about her family drifting apart as Becca starts to build an independent adult life.
Dearden discussed portraying Mel’s complex journey in The Pitt’s second season, describing the writing as both well-done and challenging. She explained she had to adjust how she played the character, as she was used to adding small, spontaneous moments during filming in season 1 that felt authentic to Mel. However, the directors and writers for season 2 consistently reminded her that Mel was meant to be portrayed as deeply anxious and sad throughout the season.
I really appreciated seeing Dearden explore a different side of Mel, and she definitely nailed it. But honestly, after watching season 3 of The Pitt, I’m hoping Mel catches a break in her personal life next time around. She’s been through a lot, and it would be nice to see her a little happier, you know?
I felt like Mel was having a really rough day, and I just wanted to help however I could. It seemed like everything was piling up on her, and it just didn’t let up at all – it was completely overwhelming.
