People are loving ‘Number One,’ the 1997 sci-fi comedy, and it’s become one of the most popular movies on Tubi as the new year approaches.
I’ve been checking, and as of December 30th, Men in Black is actually the most popular movie on the free streaming service Flix Patrol shows! Honestly, it’s not a shock – everyone knows and loves Men in Black, so it makes sense it’s doing so well again on streaming.
The movie Men in Black quickly became a huge success, bringing in $589.4 million worldwide on a $90 million budget. Featuring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as secret agents investigating aliens on Earth, it remains popular almost three decades after its release.
Currently, audiences give Men in Black an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter. Critics are even more enthusiastic, giving it a 91% Tomatometer score. They particularly enjoyed the movie’s clever humor, impressive special effects, and strong performances by Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones.
Even awards shows were captivated by Men in Black. The movie was a strong contender during the 1998 awards season, receiving a Golden Globe nomination for Best Comedy or Musical and three Academy Award nominations. It ultimately won the Oscar for Best Makeup.
More Men in Black May Soon Be On The Way
Good news for fans of Men in Black watching on Tubi: a fifth movie is reportedly being developed by Sony Pictures. Deadline announced the project earlier this month.
Following the success of the recent Bad Boys movies – Bad Boys For Life (2020) and Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024) – a fifth film featuring the top-secret organization is reportedly in the works. While details are scarce, Chris Bremner, the writer behind the last two Bad Boys films, is writing the script.
Industry insiders say studio heads are hoping Smith will reprise his role as Agent for another film. While Smith hasn’t committed yet, reports suggest he’s waiting to read the script from Bremner before making a decision. Sony Pictures has not made any official statement about this.
Look, a great script is always key, but knowing Will Smith’s history, I bet Sony could really sweeten the deal by offering him a helicopter ride to Steven Spielberg’s place! He actually told a story about how Spielberg got him to sign on for the first Men in Black – apparently, a quick chopper trip was part of the pitch. It’s a classic Hollywood move, and clearly, it works!
Will Smith admitted he had a slight understanding of the Men in Black concept, but he didn’t want to make the film immediately after Independence Day. He didn’t want to do two alien movies in a row. During a conversation on Kevin Hart’s Hart to Heart, Smith explained that Steven Spielberg convinced him to take the role with a touch of Hollywood charm, understanding Smith’s reluctance to play Agent J.
I’ll never forget when Steven Spielberg sent a helicopter to pick me up for a meeting,” Smith recalled. “It landed right at his house, and he immediately got straight to the point. After a little lemonade, he asked me directly why I wasn’t interested in starring in his movie. He even paused, like he was waiting for me to say something, and I could practically hear him thinking, ‘I directed Jaws and E.T., you know!’
Men in Black is currently available to stream on Tubi.
