Zoe Saldaña has found incredible success in major movie franchises. She’s played Neytiri in three Avatar films, Gamora in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Uhura in the Star Trek movies, making her one of the highest-earning actors ever. With the upcoming Avatar: Fire And Ash, could she surpass Scarlett Johansson and become number one? Let’s take a closer look.
Zoe Saldaña Just Became The No. 2 Highest-Grossing Actor Of All Time
Zoe Saldaña has climbed to number two on the list of highest-grossing actors of all time, according to USA Today. The success of the new Avatar movie, Avatar: Fire And Ash, helped her surpass Samuel L. Jackson, bringing her films’ total worldwide earnings to nearly $15 billion – exceeding Jackson’s total of over $14.6 billion.
Avatar: Fire and Ash has quickly become a massive commercial success, earning $761.6 million globally in under two weeks. It opened with $88 million in North America and $257 million internationally, totaling a worldwide debut of $345 million. The film continued to perform well in its second weekend, bringing in another $64 million domestically and pushing its global total to $740 million. Experts at The Hollywood Reporter predict the movie will surpass $1 billion in earnings by the end of next weekend.
What Stands Between Zoe Saldaña Surpassing Scarlett Johansson’s No. 1 Status?
Scarlett Johansson became the highest-grossing actor ever this summer, earning an additional $869 million with the release of Jurassic World: Rebirth. This brings her career total to $15.4 billion. Zoe Saldaña is now approximately $402.6 million away from overtaking Johansson and becoming the top box office earner.
For the actress to become a major star, Avatar: Fire and Ash needs to earn at least $1.164 billion worldwide before its time in theaters is over. Is that likely? While the previous Avatar film reached $2 billion by late January 2023, Fire and Ash is currently making a little less money than Way of Water.
With little competition in January, Zoe Saldaña is currently favored to top the highest-grossing actor list, especially with Avatar 3 performing well in theaters. However, it’s still too early to say for sure. Regardless of the final outcome, it’s remarkable that two women are currently ahead of established box office stars like Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Pratt, Tom Cruise, Dwayne Johnson, and Tom Hanks.
