Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway Reunite in Devil Wears Prada 2 Teaser

A sneak peek at The Devil Wears Prada 2? Groundbreaking indeed.

Even though the new movie, a sequel to the popular 2006 film, isn’t out until May, a short trailer has given fans their first glimpse of Meryl Streep returning as the sharp-tongued Miranda Priestly and Anne Hathaway reprising her role as Andy Sachs.

The trailer begins with the sound of ruby red heels—decorated with metal studs—as a woman walks quickly through an office. These shots are mixed with glimpses of the fashion industry: clothes being hung, celebrities arriving at fancy events, a model getting dressed in a high-fashion gown, champagne being opened, and cameras flashing.

At first, the camera only shows the red high heels, with just a glimpse of the skirt. But there’s no doubt who’s walking in them – it takes a truly confident person to command attention like that.

As the camera pulls back to show an elevator door opening, Miranda Priestly turns around. She’s wearing a classic black and white houndstooth skirt with a red belt and black blouse, and her hair is styled in her signature white pixie cut. She also has black sunglasses on.

But unlike the original film, she isn’t the only person steering the ship this time around.

Just as the doors are about to close, a hand sneaks in, Andy stepping in to join her former boss.

Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe who else is in this season! Along with the returning favorites, they’ve added Simone Ashley, Pauline Chalamet, Justin Theroux, and BJ Novak! But the biggest news? Lady Gaga is going to be in it! I heard she filmed her scenes in Milan on October 10th – I’m seriously losing it right now!

Okay, so the cast is being so secretive about everything happening with the sequel, it’s driving me crazy! But Emily just reacted to all the attention while they were filming in New York, and honestly, it was everything. I’ve been following every little detail, and seeing her acknowledge all the fans losing it was amazing. I’m just completely obsessed and need to know everything!

“It feels a bit like we’re on display for everyone,” joked the star of Smashing Machine in an interview with TopMob News last September. “But that’s a good thing – people seem genuinely happy to see us.”

Andy, now more mature, experienced, and stylishly dressed, wore a classic pearl necklace with a fitted black vest. Her long, dark hair was carefully styled in waves.

“Miranda,” she greets her companion, with the fashion executive replying, “Took you long enough.”

As the elevator doors started to shut, Andy smiled and put on her own dark sunglasses.

The trailer ends with a glimpse of returning cast members Meryl, Anne, Stanley Tucci, and Emily Blunt, all of whom appeared in the first movie.

The cast now includes Simone Ashley, Pauline Chalamet, Justin Theroux, BJ Novak, and even Lady Gaga, who filmed her scenes in Milan on October 10th.

The actors haven’t revealed much about the upcoming movie, but Emily recently talked about all the attention they were getting while filming in New York City.

“It feels a bit like we’re on display for everyone,” joked the star of Smashing Machine in an interview with TopMob News last September. “But that’s a good thing – people seem really enthusiastic.”

The wait for the next movie will be a long one, but there’s still a lot to enjoy about the first Devil Wears Prada film. Keep reading to discover some fascinating behind-the-scenes details!

Even before the book The Devil Wears Prada was published, a movie adaptation was already being planned. Fox executives were impressed by the first 100 pages and a summary, which were enough to secure the rights to the story based on author Lauren Weisberger’s time as assistant to Vogue‘s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour. Carla Hacken, a former Fox executive, recalled to Variety in 2016 that she was the first at the studio to read it and immediately recognized the character of Miranda Priestly as a compelling villain, leading them to quickly acquire the rights.

Even before the book became a New York Times bestseller in 2003, work began on adapting it for the screen. After four writers tried to create a straightforward storyline, Aline Brosh McKenna was brought in to write a new version. Her script focused on the compromises women make to advance their careers at fashion magazines. “I wrote a first draft fairly quickly—in about a month,” McKenna explained. “Then I revised it based on feedback from everyone involved.”

Creating the story for the film presented challenges because many fashion industry insiders were hesitant to speak with the author, fearing retribution from Anna Wintour and Vogue. According to the author, one anonymous source told her the characters were too kind, pointing out that people in that world are often too busy and focused on their own success to be nice. Based on that feedback, the author revised the script to portray the characters as more driven and less accommodating.

Director David Frankel told Entertainment Weekly that Anna Wintour’s influence created challenges when finding filming locations. The Metropolitan Museum of Art wouldn’t allow them to film there because of the Met Ball, and Bryant Park—a frequent New York Fashion Week venue—was also unavailable.

We couldn’t even film in the apartment buildings we considered for Miranda’s place – the building committees wouldn’t allow it. Luckily, a friend of producer Wendy Finerman let us borrow a five-story townhouse on the Upper East Side instead.

Bethenny Frankel shared a story about how accurately they recreated Anna Wintour’s office in the movie. Apparently, production designer Jess Gonchor secretly visited Wintour’s actual office for inspiration. The recreation was so realistic that, according to Frankel, Wintour herself redesigned her office after seeing the film.

The costumes also proved difficult to source. At first, designer Frankel explained to EW, no major designers would loan clothing for the movie, fearing the disapproval of Anna Wintour.

As a huge fan, I was so fascinated to learn about the incredible work Patricia Field did on the costumes! She put together around 150 pieces from designers like Donna Karan, Zac Posen, Rick Owens, and even Prada. What really struck me was how carefully she made sure Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly looked distinct from Anna Wintour herself. Meryl even joked about having to be extra careful while eating – no spaghetti allowed near those borrowed clothes, because everything had to be returned in perfect condition!

5. And Wintour has at least a slight sense of humor about the whole thing. Streep sat down with the Vogue head for the fashion bible’s 125th anniversary issue, sharing her experience portraying Wintour’s late friend Katherine Graham in 2017’s The Post. Asked about the most challenging character she’s ever played, Streep responded, “Oh! I should say…” trailing off as Wintour jumped in. “No, no!” she said with a laugh. “We’re not going there, Meryl.”

Wintour actually did see the movie—the same screening as her previous assistant, Weisberger. Later, she told 60 Minutes that while she found it entertaining, the film wasn’t an accurate portrayal of life at the magazine.

Meryl Streep was the only actress the studio considered for the role of Miranda, according to studio VP Hacken, who told Variety they hadn’t even thought about anyone else. Hacken recalled desperately hoping Streep would accept the part. When Streep’s agent called to say she’d read the script and was willing to meet with the director, Hacken was overjoyed and briefly celebrated before getting back on the phone.

Meryl Streep explained to Entertainment Weekly that she admired the character’s strength and refusal to compromise herself. She appreciated that the character didn’t shy away from her flaws, and that she didn’t try to be likable to get what she wanted – something Streep’s friend, Carrie Fisher, used to describe as being overly accommodating. Streep noted that the character simply didn’t engage in that kind of behavior.

Before agreeing to the role, Meryl Streep did something very characteristic of the character she would play – she asked for a raise. Although she had already won two Oscars and received eleven other nominations, Streep wasn’t used to negotiating her salary. But this time, she confidently spoke up and asked for more money.

She told Variety that the initial offer felt a little low, and didn’t quite reflect how much she contributed to the project. After she was prepared to leave, they doubled it. She was 55 and had recently learned to negotiate for herself.

Streep also requested specific scenes to avoid portraying Miranda as a one-dimensional character. She wanted to show Miranda’s expertise in fashion – particularly the famous scene about the cerulean sweater – and also a more vulnerable side, shown in the private hotel room scene where she lets her guard down.

Meryl Streep proactively decided on the character’s signature white hair, even debuting the look during a meeting with studio executives. Director David Frankel told EW that Streep fully embodied Miranda Priestly during that meeting, and the executives were so captivated by her transformation that they didn’t even comment on the hair – they simply looked into her eyes and remained silent.

Anne Hathaway revealed she wasn’t the first choice for her role in The Devil Wears Prada. She jokingly said on RuPaul’s Drag Race that she was actually the ninth actress considered for the part, implying she had to work really hard to convince producers she was right for the role – perhaps even harder than her character, Andy, worked for Miranda.

Anne Hathaway shared with Variety that while she didn’t need to audition, she had to be very persistent. She even went so far as to write “hire me” in the sand of a Zen garden! When she finally found out she’d gotten the part, she was at home putting on a shirt with friends. She remembers running into her living room, still half-dressed, and excitedly yelling, “I got The Devil Wears Prada! I got The Devil Wears Prada!”

Anne Hathaway landed the role after the studio’s first choice, Rachel McAdams, turned it down several times. Director Frankel told Entertainment Weekly that they offered the part to McAdams, who was filming The Family Stone at the time, three times. McAdams, fresh off hits like Mean Girls and The Notebook, wasn’t interested in doing another popular, mainstream film. According to Frankel, the studio really wanted her, but she was set on not taking the role.

Kate Hudson turned down a highly coveted role, admitting the timing just didn’t work out. Speaking on Capital FM’s Capital Breakfast in February 2025, she said she regretted not making it happen, and immediately felt disappointed when she first read the script.

Meryl Streep, impressed by Anne Hathaway’s performance in the 2005 Oscar-winning film Brokeback Mountain, played a key role in getting Hathaway cast in The Princess Diaries. Director Garry Marshall remembered that Streep saw Hathaway’s scene, spoke with her, and then called Fox executive Tom Rothman to say she believed Hathaway was talented and they would work well together.

Finding the right actress for Emily proved even harder. Frankel reviewed over 100 auditions for the role of Miranda’s tough assistant (including Tracie Thoms, who later auditioned for the part of Andy’s friend Lily). Ultimately, it was Emily Blunt, who showed up dressed casually, that stood out to him.

Emily Blunt was already auditioning for the film Eragon at the Fox studio when a casting director asked her to read for The Devil Wears Prada. As she told The Late Late Show in May 2021, she was in a hurry to catch her flight and felt flustered. She did the reading while wearing sweatpants and didn’t feel she made a good impression.

A few days after losing out on the role in Eragon, Emily Blunt received a call from casting director Billy Frankel. She told Variety that she was at a club in London and had to take the call from the bathroom. Frankel explained that while he liked her audition, the studio wanted to see her again, this time dressed more like the character.

Emily was originally conceived as an American character, but after Kate Blunt performed the sharp dialogue with her British accent, the writers quickly adapted the script. As screenwriter McKenna explained to Entertainment Weekly, they met for coffee and added British phrases and expressions throughout the script to suit her accent.

Emily Blunt recently shared a story about how she draws inspiration from everyday life. Appearing on The Howard Stern Show, Blunt admitted to borrowing moments from people she encounters. She recalled observing a frustrated mother in a supermarket while filming a movie. The mother, while scolding her child, used a specific gesture and phrase – opening and closing her hand while saying, ‘Yeah, I’m hearing this, and I want to hear this.’ Blunt liked it so much, she incorporated the line into her film, and it’s now a memorable part of her performance.

Stanley Tucci played a key role in creating some of the most memorable lines in the film. After a lengthy search for the perfect actor to play art director Nigel, Tucci took the role just in time, as he told Entertainment Weekly. He then perfectly captured Nigel’s witty and sarcastic personality, even coming up with some of the character’s funniest lines on the spot.

Stanley Tucci recalled fondly a scene where Miranda first arrives at the office, causing a bit of a panic. He shared with Buzzfeed that the cast kept bursting into laughter during filming, and director David Frank kept improvising lines for Tucci to deliver. Ultimately, ‘Gird your loins’ was the line that made the final cut. Tucci also revealed to Entertainment Weekly that one of his suggestions, ‘Tits in!’, was a recurring source of amusement but didn’t make it into the movie.

One of his most cherished memories from making the film is the connection he made with his costars. He became close enough with Emily Blunt to be invited to her 2010 wedding to John Krasinski, where he reconnected with Felicity Blunt, who is now his wife. They married in 2012 and have two children, Matteo and Emilia.

As Joe Tucci told People magazine, he first met his current wife at the premiere of his 2006 film. He was still married to his late wife, Kate, at the time, and she had just been diagnosed with breast cancer. He explained that he made the movie, Kate began treatment, and then they attended the premiere. She lived for four more years after that. Interestingly, Felicity—Emily’s sister and now his wife—actually spoke with Kate at the premiere, and he has a photo of them together.

Rosario Dawson, similar to Anne Hathaway, vividly remembers getting the call about landing the role of Lily – it happened on her 30th birthday in August 2005. While she felt good about her audition – having often played supporting, ‘best friend’ characters at that point in her career and thinking Lily would be a natural fit – she was still overjoyed when she found out she’d been cast.

Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe this! I was at a workshop at Dartmouth – can you even imagine?! – working on a new play by Alan Ball, the absolute genius! And get this, I found out I got the part in The Devil Wears Prada… over LUNCH! Someone just casually dropped it, like, ‘Oh, by the way, you booked Devil Wears Prada. Happy birthday!’ Seriously, the best birthday surprise EVER. It’s still such a good memory!

Thoms recalls seeing Adrian Grenier, who was very popular during his time on Entourage, surrounded by enthusiastic fans. Instead of signing autographs, Grenier cleverly gave each fan a CD by his band, The Honey Brothers.

Thoms observed that Josh Grenier, who played Nate, used his role to highlight the talents of his bandmates, as he wasn’t the lead singer himself. Thoms admired how Grenier thoughtfully acknowledged everyone’s contributions and actively returned that support to his fellow musicians.

Thoms really enjoyed her time working on the project, describing it as feeling like a grown-up, glamorous New York experience, similar to the show Sex and the City. However, she does wish one thing had gone differently.

She had a specific idea for how the Marc Jacobs bag would be used in a memorable scene – the one where Lily and Thoms clearly wanted it. She asked the props team to keep the bag hidden until filming began so her reaction would be real. “The excitement – the gasping, reaching, and begging – happened because the bag was truly beautiful,” she explained.

She confessed to TopMob News that she loved the purse so much she’d even imagined a storyline about keeping it. Unfortunately, the scene where she’d ‘accidentally’ leave it behind at work was removed, meaning she never got a chance to take it. She jokingly lamented that it was ‘very sad’.

Meryl Streep didn’t travel to Paris for the film. Originally, no one was scheduled to film in Paris for the scenes depicting Miranda and Andy’s trip to Paris Fashion Week. Director David Frankel was shocked by this, but he created a compelling preview that convinced the studio to move the film’s release to the summer and increase its budget.

Meryl Hathaway and Simon Baker (playing Christian, her other love interest) traveled to France for two days of filming. However, Meryl Streep shot her scenes in New York because the studio said it would be too expensive to fly her to France.

Meryl Streep actually ended up missing out on a lot of the enjoyable moments on set. She explained to Entertainment Weekly that fully committing to her stern Miranda character and distancing herself from the playful atmosphere was a difficult experience. She could hear everyone having fun, and it made her feel down. She jokingly told herself it was the cost of playing a boss, and that experience was the last time she ever tried such an immersive acting technique.

Before Meryl Streep playfully turned distant, she quickly encouraged Anne Hathaway, telling her, “I think you’re going to be great, and I’m really happy to be working with you…and that’s the nicest thing I’ll say to you,” according to Hathaway’s recollection in People magazine.

That’s all.
