To celebrate its 30th anniversary, SNK is bringing back the classic Metal Slug series with a fresh start.
A new website has launched to build excitement for a major update, hinting at a fresh start for the game. It encourages players to watch for more details about what’s coming next.
Here’s an excerpt from the full message:
Players have been captivated by the game’s stunning visuals since its release – from the soldiers’ funny and realistic movements to the massive war machines that create a powerful impact when destroyed. Combined with easy-to-learn controls and exciting, quick action, it’s no surprise this SNK game became popular in both arcades and on home consoles.
The famous Japanese developer also created official social media pages for the game on X (formerly Twitter). You can find links to them below:
It seems likely a new game for current consoles is being made, but it’s important to remember the series has always remained active in some form.
Metal Slug XX was the final traditional Metal Slug game released on a PlayStation console – specifically the PSP, though it was also playable on PS4. However, the series continued with spin-off titles, like Metal Slug Tactics, which came out on the PS5 in 2024.
While it was enjoyable, what players really wanted was a return to the classic Metal Slug experience, and that’s exactly what this delivers.
Okay, so I just picked up the Metal Slug Anthology on my PS5. It’s basically a collection of the classic games that originally came out on the PS2 way back in 2007. It’s awesome because it has all six original Metal Slug titles, plus Metal Slug X! Just a heads-up though, don’t expect to find Metal Slug XX in this bundle.
Plus, you can find a lot of these classic arcade games on the PlayStation Store through Hamster’s ACA Neo Geo collection.
SNK has a long history of exciting, fast-paced action games – about 30 years’ worth – and we’ll have to wait and see what they come up with next.
