Metro 2039 Goes Back to Its Roots for Series’ Darkest Game Yet, Out on PS5 This Winter

As a huge Metro fan, I was so excited to finally get a proper look at Metro 2039! 4A Games just dropped a 15-minute video showing off the first trailer for the PS5 game. It’s packed with interviews with the people making the game, and ends with a little bit of actual gameplay. They’re aiming for a Winter release, and you can check out the whole thing above – it looks incredible!

The latest installment puts you in the role of “The Stranger,” a character who speaks and returns the series to its roots – the Moscow metro tunnels. This time, the developers at 4A Games are aiming for a significantly more unsettling and grim atmosphere. They’re building a carefully designed, story-focused campaign that will make you truly feel the oppressive weight of a decaying world and pull you into increasingly terrifying and confined experiences.

Unlike the previous PS5 game, Metro Exodus, which featured larger, more open areas, the upcoming Metro 2039 seems to be returning to the tighter, more story-driven level design of the original two games. According to 4A Games, they’re building a detailed and believable world that will showcase the very worst aspects of human behavior.

I’m really digging how this game does storytelling. They’ve got these things called “frozen stories” built into each area. Basically, every location has a purpose and a story, but you figure it out just by looking around – no cutscenes or talking needed! You’ll walk through a room on your way to the next goal and just understand what happened there based on how things are placed. It’s super immersive and clever.

This story was created with input from Dmitry Glukhovsky, the author of the novels that inspired the game series.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine deeply impacted him, and he had to leave Russia due to his outspoken criticism of the government.

The war in Ukraine deeply affected the creation of Metro 2039. The developers altered the story to focus even more on the impact of decisions, their consequences, and the sacrifices needed to build a future. Despite facing challenges like missile and drone attacks, and relying on generator power, 4A Games remains resilient, stating, “We are a team of fighters.”

The new Metro 2039 game is being developed using 4A Games’ own engine. The developers, who were among the first to use ray tracing in Metro Exodus, are now refining that technology. They’re aiming for a visually stunning and beautiful experience that also runs more smoothly and efficiently this time around.

4A Games plans to launch Metro 2039 on PS5 this winter and promises to deliver the core elements that define the Metro series: a tense, dark atmosphere, claustrophobic environments, and meaningful consequences for every action and choice players make.
