Big news for fans of high-flying action! I just learned at CinemaCon that Paramount is officially moving forward with a sequel to Top Gun: Maverick. And yes, Tom Cruise is set to reprise his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Get ready to take to the skies again – it’s happening!
Tom Cruise will once again be working with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and writer Ehren Kruger on the next Top Gun movie. It’s currently unknown whether director Joseph Kosinski will be back for the third film, or if a new director will take over.
According to Kosinski, Ehren Kruger is currently writing the screenplay. It’s based on a large-scale concept Kosinski has been developing for nearly a year, collaborating with contacts at the Navy and Lockheed Martin. Kruger is enthusiastic about the project, and they’re now working to see how it progresses.
Top Gun 3 Is Official at Paramount
Christopher McQuarrie, a co-writer and story contributor to Top Gun: Maverick, explained that figuring out the next installment wasn’t difficult. He initially expected a challenging process, but Ehren Kruger quickly presented a solid idea. After just one discussion, the basic structure was in place, making the story easy to develop.
He explained that he was looking for a fresh, challenging idea – something that really grabbed him and expanded the story in an irresistible way. He found the concept incredibly ambitious, and that’s what he found most appealing.
Top Gun 3 Can Build on Maverick’s Blockbuster Success
Released in 2022, Top Gun: Maverick arrived 36 years after the original Top Gun. The highly anticipated sequel was a box office hit, earning a significant amount of money on a $170 million budget and helping revitalize movie theaters after the COVID-19 pandemic. Critics also loved the film, giving it a “Certified Fresh” rating of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In the film, Tom Cruise returns as the skilled and daring pilot, Maverick. Years after the events of the original, Top Gun: Maverick finds Peter Mitchell back at the Top Gun training program, but this time as an instructor. The stakes get higher when he realizes one of his students, Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (played by Miles Teller), is the son of his late friend and fellow pilot, Goose.
In addition to Tom Cruise and Edward Teller, Top Gun: Maverick featured Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Monica Barbaro, Danny Ramirez, Jay Ellis, Greg Tarzan Davis, and Manny Jacinto as the new Top Gun students. Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Charles Parnell, Ed Harris, and Bashir Salahuddin played supporting roles. Notably, Val Kilmer returned as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, reprising his role from the original Top Gun. This was one of Kilmer’s last film appearances before his passing.
Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick are streaming now on Paramount+.
