Deep Silver and 4A Games have revealed that METRO 2039 is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store. The game is scheduled to release this winter.
Here are the first details, via Deep Silver:
The official unveiling of METRO 2039 highlighted its single-player campaign, focusing on a gripping story and intense, immersive atmosphere with psychological horror elements. A 15-minute presentation featured developers from 4A Games – Jon Bloch (executive producer), Andriy Shevchenko (creative director), and Pavel Ulmer (co-creative director and lead audio designer) – and included a six-minute trailer and gameplay preview. The gameplay footage combined in-game action with cinematic sequences, offering fans a look at the series’ eerie settings, impressive graphics, and familiar METRO gear, like the iconic weapons and wristwatch, during a thrilling fight with mutants.
The Year is 2039
For twenty-five years, the last people alive after a nuclear war have been fighting amongst themselves in the tunnels of the Moscow Metro, hidden beneath a ruined city. Now, these underground groups have been brought together under a single leader – Hunter, a famous warrior now calling himself the Fuhrer of the Novoreich. He claims he can save everyone and rebuild life on the surface, but the truth is that people are still stuck in the Metro, controlled by his propaganda and living under a harsh, dictatorial rule.
In this game, you take on the role of The Stranger, a solitary man plagued by disturbing visions. He must venture back into the Metro, a dangerous underground world he vowed to avoid. The Stranger will be a fully voiced character, adding a new level of depth and immersion to the immersive storytelling that the METRO series is known for.
A Classic METRO Story, Told From a Ukrainian Perspective
Originally founded in Ukraine, 4A Games is still largely a Ukrainian team, now expanded to include over 25 nationalities, all driven by a shared Ukrainian spirit of dedication and passion for their work. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has profoundly influenced the development of METRO 2039, leading to a story that emphasizes the importance of choices, their consequences, and the sacrifices needed to build a future. Though told from a uniquely Ukrainian viewpoint, METRO 2039 stays true to the core of the METRO series. Currently, the team is working mainly from Kyiv and Malta, and their ultimate goal is to deliver an experience that is unmistakably METRO.
