Metro 2039 is “Darker Than Anything You’ve Seen Before,” Says Series Author

Tomorrow, 4A Games and Deep Silver will reveal the next major Metro game, Metro 2039, during a special Xbox presentation. Fans have been waiting a long time for this new installment, and while the developers have hinted at a darker story than before, the original author of the Metro novels, Dmitry Glukhovsky, suggests it will be even more intense.

The developer stated on Twitter that the new Metro game will be significantly more atmospheric and grim than previous installments. While some joked it would simply be visually darker, that doesn’t quite fit considering the varied environments and seasons in Metro Exodus, but that’s beside the point.

The big question is still how the next Metro game will be made, and 4A Games hinted at some changes last year. After Russia invaded Ukraine, they decided to rethink the story they wanted to tell.

Over the last three years, with ongoing conflict, struggles for power, and the realities of war impacting our lives, it’s natural that these themes are reflected in the games we create. We want to confirm that Dmitry Glukhovsky, who opposes the war, remains a key part of the project, and we’re proud to continue working with him as a friend and collaborator on this important new chapter of Metro.

If the next game follows the pattern of previous titles, Metro 2039 will be set three years after the events of Metro Exodus. Metro Exodus already features much larger, more open areas for players to explore, and its year-long timeline means each season presents different obstacles. But one of the biggest additions was the ability to craft items and dismantle weapons for materials, all while playing.
