During the Xbox showcase of Metro 2039, the developers at 4A Games shared a brief gameplay clip of the new post-apocalyptic shooter. Though details were limited, the footage demonstrated the game’s impressive visuals and commitment to the dark, immersive atmosphere that defines the Metro series. You can watch it below.
The footage showcases both in-game action and cinematic cutscenes. It begins with the main character, known as the Stranger, exploring abandoned underground ruins that show signs of a previous fight. The situation quickly turns dangerous when mutated creatures attack. Though one creature manages to knock the Stranger down, he fights back and is ultimately rescued from a larger group of creatures by allies.
The gameplay footage shows the user interface is very similar to previous Metro games. Players will still use their watch to monitor their breathing filter, and the weapons haven’t changed much since Metro Exodus. They still have that classic, salvaged feel that fans of the series expect.
The highly anticipated game, Metro 2039, is scheduled to release on PC (through Steam and the Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S this winter. You can find more information in the official reveal trailer, which revisits the world of the Moscow Metro. Plus, the author of the Metro series has shared details about the game’s more intense and dramatic storyline.
