Universal Pictures has announced that Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler will be the stars of the upcoming Miami Vice movie.
The revival of the classic 1980s show, now called Miami Vice ’85, will hit theaters on August 6, 2027. Filming is expected to begin later this year.
Michael Jordan, known for his role in ‘Sinners,’ will play Detective Rico Tubbs, and Butler, famous for portraying Elvis, will play Detective Sonny Crockett.
Rumors began circulating last year that Michael and Austin were being considered to star in the film. Director Joseph Kosinski shared with Variety that he’d long been a fan of Michael and eager to collaborate with him, and that Austin was quickly establishing himself as a promising talent, noting his impressive career choices.
He added: “If it ends up being those two, I’d be very lucky.”
The show originally ran on NBC from 1984 to 1989 and followed Rico and Sonny, two detectives working undercover in Miami to fight the city’s drug trade.
This show was previously reimagined as a movie in 2006, featuring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell as the main characters.
The new version of the show, written by Dan Gilroy, will capture the flashy and seedy side of 1980s Miami. It’s taking inspiration from the original series’ first episode and season, which had a huge impact on pop culture and trends in fashion and film.

Jordan and Butler have both become well-known actors in Hollywood recently. Jordan even won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in the vampire horror film, Sinners, at the 98th Academy Awards.
The actor is also known for his parts in Creed, Black Panther and Fruitvale Station.
Butler won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama Film for his role in the 2022 movie Elvis.
The actor is also known for his roles in Masters of the Air and Dune: Part Two.
