I was so excited to read on Xbox Wire that *Clair Obscur: Expedition 33* is having a massive launch! Apparently, it’s become the biggest third-party game to hit Xbox Game Pass this year, and it’s awesome to see such a critically-loved title doing so well.
Microsoft says this record is based on how many different players tried the game within the first month it was available on Xbox Game Pass.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Sandfall Interactive’s first RPG, has had a remarkable year, recently winning seven awards – including Game of the Year – at the Golden Joystick Awards on November 20, 2025. This marks the second major success for the game this year.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is still in the running for more awards, having received 12 nominations for the Game Awards 2025, which will be held on December 11, 2025.
Guillaume Broche, creative director at Sandfall Interactive, credits Xbox Game Pass with helping to launch their game, *Clair Obscur: Expedition 33*. In an interview with Xbox Wire, he explained that Xbox’s support – from the initial announcement in Summer 2024 to featuring the game in their January Developer_Direct video – was key to reaching a large audience and spreading awareness.
He explained that the subscription service was key to getting more people to try their game, especially those who might not normally play turn-based RPGs. He noted that while the genre has a dedicated fanbase, it can be off-putting to players who prefer faster-paced games. Game Pass removed that obstacle, allowing curious players to easily try the game, explore the world of Lumière, and discover its appeal, even if they weren’t initially interested.
I’ve been playing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and it’s a really interesting turn-based RPG. The world is beautiful but broken, and the story revolves around a powerful being called the ‘Paintress’ who’s gradually wiping out humanity. You control a team of expeditioners trying to find a way to stop her.
Taking inspiration from beloved Japanese role-playing games such as Final Fantasy and Lost Odyssey, this game became a critical and commercial success, selling over three million copies.
We at Windows Central really loved this game, giving it a 4.5 out of 5 star rating. We were impressed by its engaging, strategic battles, creative world, beautiful visuals, and emotionally powerful story full of meaning.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been a big hit, and Sandfall Interactive is now working on plans to expand the game with new content.
Millions of players have hailed Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as a potential Game of the Year, and you can experience it for yourself now on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC (through Windows and Steam).
You can download and play the game on Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, and through Xbox Cloud Gaming if you have an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass subscription. Plus, Xbox Play Anywhere lets you play on both your console and PC with one purchase.
