According to Jez Corden at Windows Central, the recent all-hands meeting—celebrating Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond’s departures and welcoming new CEO Asha Sharma—focused on how Xbox plans to address its recent struggles. The company hasn’t been as successful as competitors like the PlayStation 5, largely due to the underwhelming performance of the Xbox Series X and S consoles.
Xbox has faced some challenges lately with job cuts and criticism over Game Pass price increases. However, as the console marks its 25th anniversary, there’s hope that new leadership under Sharma will revitalize the brand and bring fresh energy.
Okay, so here’s what I took away from the meeting. First, it’s all about the games – amazing games are the priority, and that means giving our studios the freedom and support they need to create them. Second, we’re really focusing on Xbox consoles again. They’re going to be the main experience, and we want to make sure playing on Xbox is instant, easy, and available to everyone, no matter where they are. And finally, things are changing fast in gaming, so we’re building for what’s next – a future where play is even better.
Okay, so Xbox has some seriously awesome games coming up – I’m really hyped for what they’ve announced! But honestly, their console itself needs a boost. It feels like we’re starting to see hints of a new Xbox that could finally go toe-to-toe with the PS5 and the rumored PS5 Pro. It needs to be worth the money, though, and offer something different from things like the Steam Deck or any new handhelds coming out. Plus, it has to play nicely with devices like the ROG Ally and Ally X. If they can pull that off, their ‘Play Anywhere’ feature would be unbeatable – I’d be throwing money at it!
Bringing this plan to life will take significant teamwork, especially given the current challenges facing the Xbox brand. However, Sharma is said to be hopeful about the future and is pushing for everyone to work together to restore Xbox to its former success.
Looking forward, success won’t depend on any single person – it will be a team effort from everyone at Xbox. We’re all in this together, not just the game studios, the platform team, or marketing and operations. We have some incredible games on the horizon, a fantastic showing planned for GDC, and I’m confident we’ll achieve great things and enjoy the journey.
It remains to be seen if today’s meeting marks a turning point for Xbox, but we’re feeling good about the year ahead for the Series X and S consoles. We’re especially excited for the release of Gears of War: E-Day and wish it were available now!
