Following an internal memo from new Microsoft Gaming CEO Asha Sharma acknowledging the rising cost of Game Pass, it appears Microsoft is re-evaluating the future of Xbox. According to sources at Windows Central, company executives are debating whether to focus Xbox as a broad gaming platform or simply as a publisher of games.
I mentioned they were considering changes to Game Pass, and there’s a huge internal debate right now about how much to focus on exclusive games. They understand the benefits of exclusivity, but ultimately, they’re deciding what kind of company they want to be: one that prioritizes building a broad ecosystem, or one that focuses primarily on publishing games.
James Corden pointed out that the Meta Quest 3 is facing similar challenges to Microsoft’s Surface line. Surface initially generated a lot of excitement, but its popularity eventually faded, and Corden suggested the Quest 3 could follow the same path.
He argued that Microsoft can’t successfully focus on both hardware and cloud services simultaneously. Prioritizing cloud would significantly diminish the Xbox hardware line, reducing it to something similar to the current Surface line – a much smaller presence than before, but not its complete end. He questioned whether that’s a desirable outcome for the Xbox brand, which is currently Microsoft’s strongest connection to consumers. Furthermore, leaked comments from Satya Nadella revealed that Xbox also holds value for Microsoft’s business deals. Executives are often more interested in discussing Xbox and its games – like Halo – than cloud technology, as it provides a way to connect with consumers outside of a work context. He believes Microsoft is increasingly aware of this benefit.
Negotiations are still happening, but it’s difficult to reach an agreement because ultimately, they’re unwilling to accept a deal that maximizes profits – it’s hard to argue with the numbers.
I was really surprised to see that internal memo from Sharma surface this week! It talked about how Game Pass pricing was being looked at, but also how crucial the service is to Xbox overall. It’s interesting to get a peek behind the scenes like that.
Game Pass is key to getting the most out of Xbox gaming, but Microsoft recognizes the current system needs improvement. Right now, the cost is too high for many players, so they’re working on finding a better balance between price and value. In the future, they plan to make Game Pass more adaptable and customizable, though this will require testing and gathering feedback over time, according to an internal memo.
There aren’t any current plans to change Game Pass pricing. However, Sharma has said she intends to have more detailed discussions with staff about what the future holds for the service.
A recent internal memo surfaced shortly after people began speculating about a new Game Pass subscription level. Data miners found the plan appears to focus solely on games made by Xbox itself, potentially including titles like Hellblade, Ori and the Blind Forest, State of Decay 2, and Gears 5, along with a variety of other first-party games.
