Microsoft’s Copilot ambitions in mobile have been crushed as Google locks down AI dominance across Android and iPhone, and makes a deal with Apple

I watched as Apple entered the generative AI race in 2024 with a new system called Apple Intelligence. It’s clearly designed to compete with popular AI tools like ChatGPT from OpenAI, Microsoft’s Copilot, and Google’s Gemini.

The company didn’t follow through on its announcements, leading to criticism that its AI plans were just hype. They’ve only released minor features like writing and image tools. As a result, they’re facing a lawsuit claiming their iPhone 16 advertising for ‘Apple Intelligence’ was misleading.

Apple leaders, like Craig Federighi and Greg Joswiak, explained that Apple Intelligence isn’t available yet because they were building two different versions of it at the same time.

Apple realized the initial version of Apple Intelligence had serious flaws and wouldn’t satisfy customers. They decided to stop working on it and concentrate on a second version. Craig Federighi stated they would only share updates on their AI plans once the second version was fully functional internally, not just demonstrated in videos.

The biggest news for me is that Siri is getting a huge upgrade – it could be released with the new iPhones later this year! I’ve been waiting for a smarter Siri for ages, and this sounds like it could finally deliver.

Apple has chosen Google’s AI technology as the base for its new Foundation Models, believing it will deliver the best and most innovative features for its users. Apple Intelligence will still operate directly on Apple devices and through secure, private cloud processing, all while continuing to protect user privacy as always.

Apple will be using Google’s Gemini AI models and cloud infrastructure as the basis for its own artificial intelligence technology. This move was anticipated, following reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman last August that Apple and Google were discussing a deal potentially costing Apple $1 billion annually to utilize Google’s AI capabilities.

Apple’s partnership with AI actually strengthens Google’s leading position in artificial intelligence and mobile technology. This makes it harder for OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot to become the dominant players in the field.

Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, has said his biggest regret as CEO was failing to win the mobile phone market, which ultimately led to a $400 billion loss for the company. Google stepped in and now owns Android, allowing them to easily add their powerful AI features to the phones used by billions of people.

Microsoft seems to be struggling to get people to use Copilot, even though it’s powered by the same AI technology as the popular chatbot, ChatGPT.

The tech company is heavily investing in artificial intelligence, and plans to transform its Windows operating system to be more proactive and automated. However, this announcement has been met with criticism, likely because people are concerned about potential privacy and security risks associated with the technology.

It’s unclear how Microsoft will get people more excited about Copilot. It’s possible the product might have gained traction earlier if Microsoft hadn’t discontinued Windows Phone – a decision made by CEO Satya Nadella. However, it’s likely we’ll never know if that would have made a difference.

The agreement also brings up questions about Apple’s collaboration with OpenAI. Earlier in 2024, Apple revealed plans to include ChatGPT in Siri to better respond to complicated requests.
