Miles Teller is still not feeling fantastic about a 2015 magazine profile of him.
I’ve been a fan of this actor for years, and I recently learned something fascinating about why he stopped doing in-depth interviews. Apparently, over ten years ago, an Esquire profile went a bit viral – and not in a good way! They used a pretty harsh term to describe him, and it really bothered him. After that, he decided to avoid those long, detailed interviews altogether. It’s understandable, really – who wants to put themselves out there like that if you’re worried about how you’ll be portrayed?
Miles told Indiewire at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival that the situation was poorly handled. He explained that he avoids doing interviews where he isn’t on camera because he’s concerned about being misquoted, having his words taken out of context, or having false statements attributed to him. The interview was published on May 19th.
The Emmy-nominated actor, who is at Cannes promoting his new film Paper Tiger, said a recent published profile didn’t accurately reflect what happened during their interview and felt like a betrayal of the conversation.
After turning 39, Miles decided he no longer wanted to participate in personal profiles. He explained to his team that he didn’t want to continue if the resulting articles didn’t accurately reflect who he was. He felt it wasn’t worth contributing to something where his life could be misrepresented.
He added that unfortunately, being a genuinely good person doesn’t always attract attention. People are more drawn to negativity and drama. Ultimately, how you treat others is what truly counts, and that past interview from 2015 happened a long time ago.
As a big fan, it was really interesting to hear the star of Michael talk about working with others. He explained that the people he collaborates with – the actors, directors, and producers – truly know the real him. He put it perfectly: when you’re actually on set, you can’t pretend to be someone you’re not; your true self always shines through.
TopMob News has reached out to Esquire for comment, but hasn’t heard back.

A controversial magazine profile of Miles Teller, published in September 2015, repeatedly used harsh language to describe him. It famously began by questioning whether he was unpleasant, and the writer ultimately suggested he could still win people over despite that behavior. The article used a vulgar term to describe him multiple times, even concluding that his appealing qualities were linked to this negative trait.
Miles immediately criticized Esquire publicly. The Whiplash actor used Twitter (now X) to express his disagreement, stating that the magazine was completely off-base. He emphasized that he doesn’t find it appealing or amusing when people act like jerks, and felt the article misrepresented his views.
Miles was very honest in his comments, but he was just one of many stars at the Cannes Film Festival. Keep reading for more photos and highlights from the event.
