Exciting news for fans of The Minecraft Movie! Kirsten Dunst is joining the sequel as the character Alex. She’ll be acting alongside returning favorites Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Danielle Brooks. Matt Berry will reprise his role as the Minecraft villager Nitwit, and Jennifer Coolidge is back as Marlene, his human partner.
Jared Hess, who directed the first movie, is back to direct the sequel. Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, and Jason Momoa are producing the film. Once again, Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary Pictures, and the creators of the Minecraft game, Mojang Studios, are partnering to make the movie.
Who Is Minecraft‘s Alex? Explained

If you’re new to Minecraft, “Alex” is one of the original character skins players could choose. She was introduced after the first skin, “Steve,” who was famously portrayed by Jack Black in The Minecraft Movie as a human transported to the game’s world and quickly becoming skilled at building. While it’s unclear how Alex will be featured in future films, the director, Jared Hess, has hinted that she and Steve will have distinct personalities, unlike their interchangeable roles in the game.
The scene after the credits of The Minecraft Movie hinted at what Alex has been up to while Steve was trapped in the Minecraft world – she’s apparently been living in his house and may have found a powerful item called the Ender Chest. This could lead to a sequel taking the characters to “The End,” a dangerous and shadowy dimension in Minecraft where the fearsome Ender Dragon lives. In the game, The End is the final challenge for players, with the Ender Dragon acting as the last boss before they can return home. Producer Mary Hess has confirmed that the post-credits scene wasn’t just a fun extra, but a setup for the next movie, and fans are already excited about it.
The first Minecraft Movie wasn’t just a hit in theaters – it quickly became a major cultural moment.
A Minecraft Movie 2 has a release date of July 23, 2027.
