Mini Review: Tales of Xillia Remastered (PS5) – PS3 RPG Is Finally Unshackled, and It’s Worth Revisiting

I’ve been a Tales of Xillia fan since the PS3 days, way back in 2011, so I’m really excited to see this game get a new life with Tales of Xillia Remastered. It totally deserves this comeback!

As Bandai Namco continues to bring classic Tales games to modern platforms, Xillia Remastered delivers a reliably enjoyable experience, as expected.

The game has received a visual refresh with brighter colors and sharper resolution. It now runs smoothly at 60 frames per second on PlayStation 5, and includes helpful new features like objective markers, a toggle for sprinting, and automatic saving.

Players who enjoyed Xillia will be happy to know the Grade Shop is available from the very beginning this time. Usually, you unlock it after finishing the game, and it lets you change how the game plays with various helpful modifications.

You can easily boost how quickly you earn experience and in-game money, letting you progress faster and replay the game effortlessly, especially if you’re enjoying a trip down memory lane. It’s a nice feature that considers different player preferences.

We believe a game like Xillia could use a little something extra to attract players now. While the RPG hasn’t become outdated, some aspects don’t quite feel right for modern audiences in 2025.

The game often involves retracing your steps through repetitive areas, and its side missions aren’t very engaging. It also takes a significant amount of time before the gameplay truly becomes interesting.

The story and characters in Xillia remain quite good. The game features two main characters – Jude, a clever but shy teenager, and Milla, a powerful being with god-like qualities – and their differing viewpoints create a compelling dynamic.

The rest of the group interacts with these two in a really engaging way. There’s a slightly awkward, unpredictable energy within the group, and that tension makes the overall story more compelling.

The battles still feel fast-paced and satisfying. Many players consider Xillia to have some of the best-balanced combat in the entire series, and they’re correct – it expertly combines powerful combos with each character’s special skills.

Although some parts of Tales of Xillia haven’t aged perfectly, the main story is still excellent. This remastered version includes some great new features and improvements, giving this classic PS3 RPG the re-release it deserved.
