More Avengers: Doomsday Cast Officially Confirmed at CinemaCon (But Not the Hero Fans Expected)

A little over a year ago, Marvel Studios showed its continued dominance in pop culture with a surprising announcement: a four-hour livestream of an empty soundstage. This event was actually a clever way to reveal the cast of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Fans learned that Florence Pugh (as Yelena Belova), Simu Liu (as Shang-Chi), and the new Fantastic Four would join the team, alongside returning favorites like Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson. Perhaps most excitingly, it confirmed that actors from the former Fox X-Men films – including Kelsey Grammer (as Hank McCoy), Alan Cumming (as Nightcrawler), and Patrick Stewart (as Charles Xavier) – will reprise their roles.

Marvel surprised everyone at CinemaCon by revealing that Kathryn Newton will reprise her role as Cassie Lang in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. While rumors have circulated since filming began, and a previous teaser hinted at Chris Evans returning as Steve Rogers, this casting announcement was unexpected. Marvel Studios officially confirmed Newton’s return, putting many of the earlier speculations to rest.

Avengers: Doomsday Confirms New Cast Member

The trailer for Avengers: Doomsday was a huge hit at CinemaCon, revealing Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom and hinting at conflicts between the Avengers and the X-Men – including appearances by Shang-Chi, Gambit, Mystique, and Yelena Belova. Considering everything shown, it’s surprising so few unconfirmed actors appeared, though a scene featuring Cassie Lang kissing her father, Paul Rudd, briefly slipped in.

As fans will remember, Cassie Lang (played by Kathryn Newton) last appeared in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which was initially intended to set up Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Luckily, even though those plans changed and Marvel decided on a different main villain, Newton’s character is still part of the future. She teamed up with her father in the 2023 movie, and now appears likely to join the Young Avengers.

There’s a lot of talk that a new team of young heroes will soon join forces in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This could include characters like Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne), America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), who began the process of forming a team in a scene after the credits of The Marvels. It’s unclear whether they’ll have a chance to team up in Avengers: Doomsday, or if their first full appearance will be in Avengers: Secret Wars.

According to Kevin Feige, the new movie, Avengers: Doomsday, continues the story from Endgame while also connecting back to the very beginning of the X-Men franchise. He described it as the long-awaited crossover event fans have wanted to see – bringing the Avengers and X-Men together on screen for the first time.

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026.
