The final chapter of the continuing remake of Final Fantasy 7 by Square Enix is not planned as an exclusive for the PlayStation 5.
For a while now, the Japanese publishing company has been hinting at it, but they officially announced on their social media platforms that the third edition will be released simultaneously for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and personal computers.
Initially, the first installment of the series was exclusively unveiled for the PlayStation 4 console, debuting in 2020. Subsequently, it became available on PS5 and PC systems in 2021, and is slated to launch on Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 on January 22nd, 2026.
In the year 2024, the follow-up game to Final Fantasy 7, titled “Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth,” was initially released exclusively for PlayStation 5 consoles. This year, it was also made available on personal computer platforms.
On several occasions, Square Enix has emphasized that they were not pleased with the sales figures for the sequel, leading them to adopt a strategy of releasing the game across multiple platforms.
It appears that this encompasses their entire library, as even recently announced titles such as Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined are included in the mix for all platforms.
It’s intriguing to observe how expanding to multiple platforms might influence the success of the series. Undeniably, it will expose the series to a broader audience than if it were solely on PlayStation, but asking consumers to support the third installment in this rebooted tale is still quite a demand.
As for the final installment, there’s been no announcement about its release date yet, along with any related materials such as images or previews. However, during a recent live broadcast, Square Enix mentioned that the project is moving forward smoothly.
