Even though NetherRealm Studios stopped regularly updating Mortal Kombat 1 almost a year ago, the game continues to be popular and is still selling well. It has now reached 8 million copies sold, up from 6.2 million in August 2025.
While it hasn’t reached the popularity or sales numbers of Mortal Kombat 11 (which sold over 15 million copies by 2022), it’s still a very successful fighting game. As of November 2025, Street Fighter 6 – its biggest rival – has sold over six million copies.
Before stopping updates and new downloadable characters, NetherRealm added the T-1000 from Terminator 2 as a playable fighter. They also included Madam Bo as the last Kameo Fighter, which fans enjoyed. And as a final surprise, they added Floyd – a character clearly inspired by the band Pink Floyd – as a hidden fighter.
So, everyone’s wondering what NetherRealm is working on next, right? They’re definitely cooking up something new, but they’re keeping it under wraps! A lot of us are hoping it’s Injustice 3 – it’s been a while since the last one came out back in January 2017. Honestly, I have no idea when they’ll announce it, but I’m keeping my eyes peeled for any news! We’ll just have to wait and see what they reveal.
