It’s quickly becoming a major player in the streaming world, especially with the release of its highly anticipated sequel just around the corner.
According to FlixPatrol, the 2021 film Mortal Kombat is now tenth on the list of most popular movies on HBO Max in the US. Although it still has some ground to cover to reach the top spots held by films like Wuthering Heights, its strong performance on HBO Max—along with consistently appearing in the top ten on Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video—shows that it remains popular and is generating excitement for the next installment.
Warner Bros.’s Latest Take on the Mortal Kombat Franchise is Easily the Best Yet
The 2021 film Mortal Kombat, directed by Simon McQuoid and written by Greg Russo and Dave Callaham, brought the long-running conflict between Earthrealm and Outworld back to the screen with intense violence. Instead of showcasing the actual Mortal Kombat tournament, the movie centers on Cole Young, played by Lewis Tan, a promising Earthrealm fighter who becomes the target of a relentless group of assassins led by Shang Tsung, portrayed by Chin Han.
When Mortal Kombat came out, it did okay, but not amazingly well – it didn’t quite double its production costs, which is usually what big movies need to do to make a profit in theaters. It ended up making $84.4 million with a $55 million budget. But even though critics weren’t blown away, the fans absolutely loved it! That positive response was enough to convince the studio to make another one, which is awesome!
What Fans Can Expect from Mortal Kombat II When It Arrives in Theaters
I’m so excited for Mortal Kombat II! It’s great to hear that familiar faces like Tan, Jessica McNamee, and Mehcad Brooks are coming back. But I’m really thrilled about the new additions to the cast! Damon Harriman is going to be amazing as Quan Chi, and honestly, seeing Karl Urban—who I love from The Boys—step into the role of Johnny Cage is just perfect. He’s such an iconic character, and I can’t wait to see Karl’s take on him!
The upcoming sequel promises to be much larger in scale, with impressive action sequences and a strong new cast. Director Lin shared in 2024 that “everything is going to be bigger.” He specifically praised Karl Urban’s portrayal of Johnny Cage, saying Urban immediately elevates the film and brings a unique level of skill and depth to the character.
Even the creator of Mortal Kombat, Ed Boon, has talked about how much depth the first two games have. He believes the films, especially those based on Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II, really capture emotion. Boon explains that if you’re looking for what makes the movies different from the games, it’s the strong emotional connections between the characters. He also notes the films are packed with hidden references – “Easter eggs” – for fans who know the games’ arenas, worlds, characters, and weapons. It’s a true celebration of Mortal Kombat lore.
You can now watch Mortal Kombat on HBO Max. Mortal Kombat II is scheduled to be released in movie theaters on May 8th.
