Even after all these years, the 1967 Spider-Man cartoon remains the most recognizable TV version of the character. It brilliantly captured the spirit of the comics, from the dramatic voice-over narrating Peter Parker’s life to its faithful adaptations of famous stories. And, of course, the show featured a fantastic roster of memorable villains.
Over five seasons, Spider-Man battled many of his most famous and formidable foes. The strongest villains in Spider-Man: The Animated Series really tested Peter Parker, forcing him to rely on more than just his physical strength—he often needed to use his intelligence and work with others to win.
Alistair Smythe Designed the Tri-Spider-Slayer To Get Revenge On Spider-Man
In an attempt to defeat Spider-Man, Kingpin hired Alistair Smythe to finish his father’s project: building strong robots called Spider-Slayers. While the first Spider-Slayer was a threat, Spider-Man was still able to defeat it with his intelligence.
Alistair built two new Spider-Slayers that caused even more trouble for Spider-Man, particularly in Season 1, Episode 3, “Return of the Spider-Slayers,” when they combined their powers. These robots were armed with lasers and missiles and had a special coating to prevent Spider-Man from sticking to them and finding their vulnerabilities.
This villain group remains the least powerful of Spider-Man’s foes, as they require someone to control them from a distance. Even early in his career, Spider-Man easily defeated them by tricking them and using a bomb.
Hydro-Man Wielded Incredible Power But Didn’t Know How To Use It
Morrie Bench is a particularly unsettling villain from the animated Spider-Man series. He was Mary Jane’s possessive ex-boyfriend, and after a bizarre accident while serving in the Navy, he gained the power to transform his body into water.
Once he developed his powers, he briefly joined the Frightful Four. Later, in Season 2, Episode 3, “Chapter III: Hydro-Man,” he tried to scare Mary Jane into going out with him again. While Hydro-Man is incredibly strong – arguably too powerful to be a typical Spider-Man enemy – he lacks the smarts to fully control his abilities. He can not only turn into water himself, but also manipulate any water source around him.
Since he was mostly water, this villain believed he couldn’t be defeated and threatened to flood New York City unless Mary Jane agreed to be his girlfriend. Luckily, Spider-Man cleverly pushed him into the sun, where the intense heat caused him to evaporate.
The Spot Wielded An Incredible Ability He Couldn’t Control
Okay, so before he became the villain known as the Spot, Johnathan Ohnn was actually a pretty smart scientist working for Stark Enterprises. He was developing some really cutting-edge tech involving dimensional portals. But things went south when Venom and Carnage got their hands on it and started messing around. Tony Stark, understandably freaked out by the potential for disaster, immediately pulled the plug on the whole project. It’s a classic case of good intentions gone wrong, and it’s fascinating to see how that ultimately led to the creation of the Spot.
Ohnn initially teamed up with the Kingpin to complete his work, but quickly discovered the Kingpin also intended to exploit the technology for harmful purposes. Determined to disappear, Ohnn started using the technology as the Spot and, in Season 3 Episode 12, “Chapter XII: The Spot,” stole the money needed to escape with his colleague, Dr. Sylvia Lopez.
Doctor Ohnn, known as The Spot, had the power to create portals to any location he desired. Originally, he needed a machine to do this, but after an accident, he could open portals using only his mind. However, The Spot’s power is unstable, and he eventually loses control. To prevent chaos, he must enter a portal and seal all of them from within.
The Green Goblin Tried His Hardest To Destroy Spider-Man’s Life
When Hobgoblin first appeared, he immediately challenged Spider-Man with his gliding abilities and unique bombs. But it wasn’t a shock that the Green Goblin continued to be an even bigger threat.
Unlike Hobgoblin, Norman Osborn, as the Green Goblin, possessed a powerful serum that made him as strong as Spider-Man. He’s consistently ranked among Peter Parker’s most dangerous enemies in the animated series and is known for causing significant harm.
Once Norman Osborn learned Peter Parker’s secret identity, he dedicated himself to destroying Peter’s life, almost succeeding in the episode “Enter the Green Goblin.” With the help of the Spot’s unique weapons, Norman managed to make the real Mary Jane vanish for the rest of the show.
Venom Copied All Of Peter Parker’s Powers And Improved Them
I was so shocked when I found out Peter’s old symbiote didn’t just disappear! It actually ended up bonding with Eddie Brock, and that’s how a whole new enemy emerged in Season 1, Episode 10, “The Alien Costume, Part 3.” It was a really unexpected twist!
As a huge Spider-Man fan, I always found the Venom storyline so compelling because knowing Peter Parker’s secret identity gave Venom a unique advantage. He could really mess with Spidey in ways no other villain could. Honestly, if Venom hadn’t been so full of himself, their first fight would have been a total blowout. He kept attacking, and Spider-Man was just completely blindsided, not even knowing where the hits were coming from!
The alien symbiote gives Venom double the strength of Spider-Man. His webs are also much stronger than Peter Parker’s, so much so that even Spider-Man has trouble escaping them. What makes Venom especially dangerous is that he doesn’t trigger Spider-Man’s Spider-Sense, effectively removing Peter’s key warning system.
Carnage Wanted To Cause As Much Destruction As He Could With His Powers
Carnage came to be because Baron Mordo interfered with events, hoping to help his master, Dormammu, invade Earth. A new symbiote was born from Venom while on John Jameson’s spaceship, and Mordo arranged for the ship to return to Earth so both symbiotes could find hosts, as shown in Season 3, Episode 11, titled “Chapter XI: Carnage.”
After returning to Eddie Brock, the Venom symbiote left its counterpart, Carnage, with the deranged Cletus Kasady. Kasady shared an even deeper connection with his symbiote than Eddie did with Venom, granting him immense strength and the ability to form any weapon he could imagine.
When serving Dormammu, he can steal life force with just a touch. That’s why Spider-Man often needs help from powerful allies like War Machine and Venom to permanently stop Carnage. However, despite being dangerous, Carnage ranks lower on Spider-Man’s list of enemies because most of the villains Spider-Man fights pose threats to the entire world or even the universe.
Baron Mordo Mastered The Dark Arts And Created A Cult Of Followers
Baron Mordo, similar to Dr. Strange, was a student of the Ancient One and learned magic from her. Unlike Strange, Mordo craved power and tried to turn against the Ancient One, but Dr. Strange intervened and stopped him.
After his scheme fell apart, Baron Mordo allied himself with Dormammu, seeking more power, as seen in the Season 3 premiere, “Chapter I: Doctor Strange.” With mystical abilities nearly matching Doctor Strange’s, Mordo ranks among Spider-Man’s most formidable foes.
What really sets this villain apart, though, is his incredible power to delve into people’s minds. He doesn’t just attack physically; he preys on their deepest desires, convincing them he’s the key to achieving everything they’ve ever wanted. It’s a truly unsettling ability, and he used it to build a frighteningly devoted following. Thankfully, it took the combined might of Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and Wong to finally take that cult down.
Spider-Carnage Used His Mind To Nearly Wipe Out All Of Existence
Spider-Carnage is arguably the most threatening villain in Spider-Man: The Animated Series. The show gradually leads up to his appearance in Season 5, Episode 12, “Chapter I: I Really, Really Hate Clones,” with the groundwork being laid as early as Season 3 when Madame Web is introduced.
His true plan is much more dangerous than anything even powerful, otherworldly foes like Dormammu could have conceived. When Peter Parker, in a confused state, bonded with the Carnage symbiote, the resulting Spider-Carnage possesses all the abilities of both Spider-Man and Carnage.
In the recent Madame Web story, Spider-People from countless universes were sent against the villain, hoping one of them could find a way to defeat him. Considering his goal was to destroy all of reality, it’s surprising even more powerful beings didn’t intervene.
Doctor Doom Couldn’t Control The Powers He Stole From The Beyonde
Doctor Doom is already a formidable enemy, but his genius-level intellect—matching that of Reed Richards—combined with his skill in magic makes it easy to understand why he rules the nation of Latveria alone.
Although Doctor Doom wasn’t originally created as an enemy of Spider-Man, he becomes very important in the show’s last season. In Season 5, Episode 9, “Chapter I: Arrival,” which adapts the famous Marvel storyline Secret Wars, Doctor Doom uses advanced technology to gain the reality-altering powers of the Beyonder.
With these abilities, he fought Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and many other of Earth’s most powerful heroes. He isn’t considered the strongest, however, because the Beyonder only let him use his powers for a short time, and even then, Doctor Doom couldn’t fully control them.
Dormammu Wielded The Power Of Universes
Dormammu first appeared in the third season of Spider-Man: The Animated Series and is considered Spider-Man’s most powerful foe. He controls the power of the Dark Dimension and is said to absorb energy from whole universes once he gains control.
Dormammu is an incredibly powerful villain with the ability to change reality, move objects with his mind, and project energy. He’s so strong that Spider-Man always needs help when facing him. In the first episode of Season 3, titled “Chapter I: Doctor Strange,” Spider-Man teamed up with Doctor Strange and his assistant, Wong, to defeat Dormammu.
It took a team effort – including Spider-Man, Iron Man, War Machine, and a surprisingly helpful Venom – to finally defeat him. He’s undoubtedly Spider-Man’s most powerful adversary yet.
