Like all filmmakers, Steven Spielberg has ideas that don’t always make it to the screen. One of those was a movie based on the novel “Robopocalypse” by Daniel H. Wilson, which he started developing in 2010 but never finished. So, what became of Spielberg’s plans for “Robopocalypse”?

What was Spielberg’s Robopocalypse about?

The film served as a warning, depicting humanity’s final battle against a robot rebellion. It was written by Drew Goddard, who later went on to write popular films like World War Z, The Cabin in the Woods, The Martian, and the recent hit, Project Hail Mary.

Filming preparations were going smoothly, and they’d started looking for places to shoot, but in 2013, the project stalled. The main reason was a lack of funding.

I remember when DreamWorks and 20th Century Fox signed on to help make this movie, but the costs just kept climbing. It was getting so expensive that people started worrying it would ruin the studio, just like what happened with Heaven’s Gate and MGM. Spielberg actually explained the budget situation, and it was pretty concerning…

The potential movie was incredibly expensive – so much so that it could have bankrupted the studio and DreamWorks, my production company. I realized I wasn’t willing to take on that financial risk, so I decided to find another company to finance it. I didn’t want DreamWorks to shoulder the cost, but other studios were interested in funding the project if I remained the director. Ultimately, I hesitated because I couldn’t be sure the movie would be successful and didn’t want to put another company in a potentially losing situation.

Will Spielberg ever make it?

The planned movie, which was to star Chris Hemsworth, Anne Hathaway, and Ben Whishaw, never got made. Its estimated $200 million budget was considered too risky, particularly for an original story, and it appears Steven Spielberg’s Robopocalypse will likely remain unfilmed.

While directors such as James Cameron readily spend huge amounts on their movies – Avatar 3 reportedly cost $400 million – Spielberg is known for being much more mindful of his budgets.
