Cyan is bringing its updated versions of the classic adventure games Myst (originally released in 2020) and Riven (remade in 2024) to PlayStation 5 on May 19th. Both games will support PlayStation VR2 and will be available for $34.99 each, according to the developer.
Myst was initially released on the Quest platform on December 10, 2020. It later became available on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC (through Steam, the Epic Games Store, GOG, and the Microsoft Store) on August 26, 2025.
The game Riven became available on June 25, 2024, for PC (through Steam and GOG), Mac (via the Mac App Store), and virtual reality platforms like Meta Quest 2 and Quest 3.
Here is an overview of each game, via Cyan:
Flatscreen and PlayStation VR2 Play
When Myst and Riven launch, you’ll be able to play them on a regular screen (2D) or with PlayStation VR2. Getting both versions to feel fantastic was the biggest challenge during development. We used what we learned from releasing Firmament on PlayStation 5 – which also supported both 2D and VR – to make each playstyle as good as possible, improving things like how you interact with the game, the graphics, and performance. And we’ve even taken lessons from these new releases and applied them back to Firmament. We can’t wait to see how players enjoy experiencing Myst and Riven the way they prefer.
Ray-Traced Reflections and Performance Mode
Both Myst and Riven will feature ray tracing, specifically for reflections, but this feature only works when playing on a standard flatscreen display. We’ve added this to the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro versions of our games. To ensure a smooth experience, the frame rate will be capped at 30 FPS when ray-traced reflections are turned on, as rendering these reflections requires significant processing power.
The game runs at a smooth 60 frames per second when ray-traced reflections are turned off, using screen-space reflections instead. Players can turn on ray-traced reflections in the Display settings by unchecking the Performance Mode box. Doing so will also slightly adjust the game’s resolution to prioritize visual quality over speed.
PlayStation 5 Pro Enhanced features
We’re excited to announce that both Myst and Riven are now enhanced for PlayStation 5 Pro! This brings improvements to how the games look in standard flat-screen mode, including clearer visuals, more detailed environments, and better textures. For players using VR on PlayStation 5 Pro, both games will have a sharper base image. Plus, in Riven‘s flat-screen mode, keeping the ‘Performance Mode’ option on will also give you a sharper image.
These games are using improved versions of Unreal Engine’s Temporal Super Resolution technology. This allows for upscaling on both the PlayStation 5 Pro and the standard PlayStation 5, resulting in enhanced graphics settings.
Power Saver Mode support
The classic games Myst and Riven are now optimized for PlayStation 5’s Power Saver mode. This feature helps reduce energy use by automatically adjusting game performance. For both titles, this means a lower render resolution and a consistent frame rate of 30 FPS, ultimately saving energy for players.
Delve Into Myst and Riven
The Cyan team put a lot of effort into rebuilding Myst and Riven specifically for the PlayStation 5, including features for the more powerful PlayStation 5 Pro. We believe players will have a fantastic experience whether they’re playing on their TV with a DualSense controller, or immersed in virtual reality with PlayStation VR2. Thank you for your continued support – we’re aiming to create amazing games for decades to come!
