Post-credit scenes are a big part of Marvel movies, but you might think they’re quick to make since they’re so short. However, the final scene in Thunderbolts was surprisingly complex, hinting at .
Gavin Bocquet, the production designer for Thunderbolts, shared an interesting detail in a YouTube interview: the post-credits scene was filmed on a real, full-scale set. This is a bit unusual for Marvel Studios, and fans familiar with how they usually make movies will likely find that surprising.
It’s easy to imagine the actors being surprised to find a Marvel set looking like a real location, rather than the usual mostly-blue screen environment. And according to Bocquet, that surprise is exactly what they felt.
So, I was watching an interview with Bocquet, and he revealed something pretty cool about that post-credit scene! Apparently, they actually shot it themselves, with Jake Schreier, the director of Thunderbolts, right there. The crazy part? They only had three days to finish it after filming! They wanted to show the inside of the new Avengers headquarters, but doing it with CGI would have taken way too long. So, they went old school and built a real, physical set instead. It was a tight turnaround, but they pulled it off!
Bocquet explains that all visuals in the scene were captured with a camera. The New York City skyline, for example, was created using a real backdrop positioned outside the windows. The only thing added digitally was the footage of The Fantastic Four’s ship as it approached Earth-616 – this was shown on a monitor the characters were watching.
How The Thunderbolts* Post-Credit Scene Teases Avengers: Doomsday
I was totally hooked from the start! The movie opens with the New Avengers – that’s what they’re calling themselves now – chatting at their base about all the confusion their name is causing. But things get really interesting when they stumble across a live video feed of this crazy spaceship from another dimension. It’s huge, and it has this massive, blue number ‘4’ painted right on the side – super weird and definitely got my attention!
The post-credit scene suggests the New Avengers will be the first team to meet the Fantastic Four, who recently joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Additionally, viewers can probably anticipate some disagreement between the team and Sam Wilson, also known as Captain America, regarding who has the right to use the Avengers name.
Viewers anticipated this scene would resolve the storyline, but Matt Shakman’s film instead concluded with a hint of things to come: a scene featuring Susan Richards (Invisible Woman, played by Vanessa Kirby) and her son Franklin being visited by Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.). Reports suggest Doom needs Franklin’s unique abilities to manage dangerous disruptions appearing across the Marvel Multiverse.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters Dec. 18, 2026.
