NBC’s Canceled Sci-Fi Series with The Greatest First Season is Finally Returning to Streaming

Many TV shows start well but lose quality in later seasons. Series like Prison Break, Revolution, and Wayward Pines are prime examples – they all had great first seasons, but subsequent seasons weren’t as good. However, one show is particularly known for its dramatic decline, and now it’s available to watch for free online.

Before Marvel’s blockbuster superhero films, the TV show Heroes was a huge hit. Premiering in 2006, it quickly became a cultural phenomenon, blending comic book themes with action and mystery. The show followed a diverse group of people around the world who unexpectedly developed superpowers. The first season, centered around the urgent mission “Save the cheerleader, save the world,” was especially gripping. Although it ran for four seasons before ending in 2010, Heroes is now available to watch for free on Tubi starting June 1st, after recently leaving Prime Video.

Heroes Had Incredible Potential But Fell Apart After Season 1 (Though It’s Not Entirely The Show’s Fault)

Although Heroes stayed engaging until the very end, its first season was truly exceptional. The second season started strong, but ultimately suffered due to factors outside of the show’s control, which would eventually lead to its downfall. The 2007 writers’ strike significantly shortened the second season from the original 23 episodes to just 11. This shortened season meant storylines weren’t fully developed and several characters were left with unresolved arcs.

As a big fan, I was really excited when Season 3 finally started addressing storylines that felt more suited to Season 2. But honestly, things quickly became a mess. The show started messing with the rules of time travel, and they flipped Sylar (Zachary Quinto) back and forth between good and bad guy so often he just lost all impact. They introduced a bunch of new characters who didn’t really fit, and even though the writers clearly tried to fix things, all their attempts to recapture the magic of that first season just didn’t land. It felt like they were constantly trying to outdo themselves, but it just kept falling flat.

By its final season, Heroes had become quite chaotic, but the show remains surprisingly engaging even after the first season. Later characters and storylines are genuinely interesting and worth revisiting. The series is best enjoyed as a complete run, as watching episodes back-to-back helps overcome the narrative issues caused by delays between seasons. Now available to stream for free on Tubi, it’s a great time to experience a show that’s both a high point and a warning for superhero television.
