Netflix released a disappointing film this week, and even its popular lead actors couldn’t prevent it from receiving poor reviews. Unlike critically acclaimed movies such as Before Midnight, All of Us Strangers, and Touch, the film failed to impress viewers, earning only $25 million despite costing $45 million to produce.
Starring Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey tells the story of two strangers who connect at a wedding. A surprising event sends them on a journey where they revisit key moments from their lives, revealing how they arrived at where they are now and hinting at the possibility of altering their destinies.
It Feels Neither Big Or Bold, But Has Aspects Of Beautiful
The film A Big Bold Beautiful Journey didn’t live up to its name, receiving negative reviews from both critics and general audiences. It earned a low 37% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer and only a slightly better 58% from viewers on the Popcornmeter. John Stark of Mac the Movie Guy described it as a disappointment with unrealized potential, featuring a talented cast lost in a meandering plot. Sammie Purcell of Rough Draft noted that the characters felt underdeveloped and the script by Seth Reiss didn’t effectively utilize the strengths of the actors or director Kogonada.
Viewers generally had mixed feelings about the movie. Many acknowledged its originality but felt it didn’t quite live up to its potential. One viewer admitted giving it a slightly higher rating than they thought it deserved, appreciating its uniqueness, but found it tried too hard to be profound. They also felt the story moved too quickly and questioned the chemistry between Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell. Another viewer expressed frustration that, despite a clever concept and strong leads, the film ultimately didn’t deliver, noting a lack of believable chemistry between the two stars and fleeting moments of promise that weren’t fully realized. Overall, most agreed it wasn’t a bad movie, but not a particularly great one either.
