In an unexpected turn of events, Netflix secured the rights for a yet-unnamed production by Nic Pizzolatto, starring Matthew McConaughey and Cole Hauser. This project marks a reunion between Pizzolatto and McConaughey, who previously collaborated on the first season of HBO’s True Detective. Netflix outbid several other streaming platforms, including Amazon and Apple, to acquire this upcoming television show. Despite being in its early stages, negotiations for both McConaughey and Hauser’s participation are said to be ongoing.
Based on The Hollywood Reporter’s report, Amazon, Apple, and Netflix vied for a project, but HBO opted out of the competitive bidding process. It appears this decision may be linked to the tense relationship between Pizzolatto and HBO. Pizzolatto was associated with the first three seasons of True Detective, but he did not participate in the fourth season, titled True Detective: Night Country. After the release of Season 4, Pizzolatto publicly criticized it on his social media, which seemed to further strain his professional relationship with HBO.
A True Detective Reunion at Netflix
Despite limited information about the unnamed venture, it’s being informally called “The Brothers Project,” as Matthew McConaughey and Steven Yeun are believed to portray siblings. Skydance Sports is said to be supporting this series, hinting at a sports connection though this hasn’t been confirmed yet. Notably, McConaughey and Yeun have previously collaborated in Richard Linklater’s classic film “Dazed and Confused” from 1993.
It’s worth noting that McConaughey is collaborating with his ex-colleague from “True Detective”, Woody Harrelson, on another brotherly venture. This new endeavor, however, is slated to be a humorous one and is currently in the works for Apple TV+.
Besides working on an unnamed TV series by Pizzolatto for Apple TV+ and a comedy project, Matthew McConaughey is also preparing to make a comeback in feature films. Since his last live-action movie role in 2019’s “The Gentlemen” as Michael Pearson, he has lent his voice to animated movies like “Sing 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine,” where he voiced Cowboypool. Up next for McConaughey is the survival drama “The Lost Bus“.
Regarding Hauser, he portrayed Rip Wheeler in the TV show Yellowstone. He’s set to return to this character in the forthcoming spinoff series titled The Dutton Ranch.
