Seven years after HBO’s critically acclaimed series Chernobyl aired, it remains unmatched in its quality and depth. Many consider it a masterpiece and one of the greatest limited series ever made. It’s a tough act to follow, given that it depicted a real event with potentially world-altering consequences. However, if you’re looking for another gripping true disaster story, Netflix has just released a new series that’s quickly gaining popularity.
Netflix’s new Brazilian miniseries, Radioactive Emergency, has quickly become popular, reaching number seven on the Top 10 list in the United States, according to Flix Patrol. Since its release on March 18th, the thriller has steadily gained viewers, now ranking just below shows like The Dinosaurs and One Piece Season 2. Radioactive Emergency is a five-part series based on the true story of a radioactive contamination event that happened in Brazil in 1987. It details everything from the initial contamination to the large-scale emergency response, sharing an important historical event that still feels impactful today.
‘Radioactive Emergency’ Hits the Top 10 on Netflix
The Brazilian miniseries Radioactive Emergency (Emergência Radioativa) recounts the real events surrounding the 1987 Goiânia accident. The five-part series depicts what happened after a radiotherapy machine was stolen from an abandoned hospital. Many people came into contact with a glowing blue substance, not realizing it was dangerously radioactive. The situation quickly escalated into a major crisis, resulting in several fatalities and requiring radiation testing for over 100,000 individuals.
The series follows nuclear physicist Márcio (Johnny Massaro) as he discovers a radioactive substance is affecting his community. He teams up with fellow scientists and doctors to investigate the source and track down everyone exposed. Radioactive Emergency balances the characters’ individual stories with a growing disaster as the investigation unfolds. It was created by writer Gustavo Lipsztein (known for The Endless Night) and directed by Fernando Coimbra, who also worked on Narcos, bringing his distinctive style to the show.
What Do People Think About the Disaster Drama?
