As a huge fan of ’80s fantasy movies, I was bummed to hear that a really fun cult classic is leaving Netflix at the start of May. The ’80s were such a golden age for fantasy films, and this one is definitely a gem! Netflix is adding a bunch of new stuff in May, which is great, but it means they have to take some titles down to make room. Sadly, this iconic fantasy flick is one of them, so if you want to watch it, you need to do so before May 1st!
You only have a little over a week to watch Harry and the Hendersons on Netflix! This charming 1987 comedy, starring John Lithgow and Melinda Dillon, will be removed from the streaming service on May 1st. The movie, produced by Amblin Entertainment, tells the story of a Seattle family who accidentally hits Bigfoot with their car and decides to take him in. What follows is a funny and heartwarming tale as they try to hide their new, gentle giant – named Harry – from the world and learn to love him as one of their own.
Harry and the Hendersons Is a Nostalgic ‘80s Movie That Still Holds Up
For a huge dose of 1980s movie magic, check out Harry and the Hendersons. It’s a perfect example of a classic ’80s family film – a normal suburban family dealing with something extraordinary, much like E.T. But the movie really focuses on the heartwarming connection between the Hendersons and Harry, rather than just being a monster movie. It’s also genuinely funny, filled with playful jokes and slapstick comedy. Despite being firmly rooted in the ’80s, the film still holds up today, largely thanks to Rick Baker’s incredible work bringing Harry to life with award-winning practical effects that still look amazing even compared to modern computer-generated imagery.
While Harry and the Hendersons wasn’t a critical success when it first came out – it has scores of 48% from critics and 54% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes – it’s since gained a dedicated following and become a cult classic. Though a theatrical sequel never happened, the story continued as a television series, also called Harry and the Hendersons, which aired for three seasons from 1991 to 1993. The show followed the same comedic premise of a family living with a friendly Bigfoot. Although it hasn’t been available on Netflix with the movie, you can now watch all 72 episodes for free on Tubi.
Where to Stream Harry and the Hendersons After It Leaves Netflix?
If you enjoyed Harry and the Hendersons or just want to watch it again, now’s the time! It’s currently only available to stream on Netflix, and it won’t be moving to other streaming services anytime soon. Although it’s leaving Netflix for the foreseeable future, you can still rent or buy the movie online.
