Netflix Sets Release Date for Sci-Fi Thriller The Last House

Netflix has announced that the new sci-fi thriller, The Last House, will premiere soon. The movie stars two actors known from other popular series, playing a couple who wake up to find themselves inexplicably trapped in their own house and must protect their family.

I’ve got some exciting news for thriller fans! Netflix has set a release date of August 7th, 2026, for their new series, The Last House. We’ve just gotten a first look at some images, and let me tell you, this family is not having a good time – they look genuinely terrified by whatever strange situation they’ve found themselves in. The cast is fantastic, led by Greta Lee, who you might recognize from Russian Doll, and Wagner Moura, known for his work in Narcos and The Secret Agent. They play Ann and Jason, the parents, and they’re joined by a really promising young ensemble including Riley Chung (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes), Emma Ho (The Baker), Noah Alexander Sosnowski (Section 8), and Gabriel Barbosa (May December). This one definitely has my attention!

A Safe Haven Becomes an Inescapable Nightmare

Director Louis Leterrier (known for films like Fast X and Now You See Me) explains that The Last House takes the idea of a family home being a safe place and flips it on its head. The film creates a terrifying situation where a family must come together to survive. It’s a nightmare scenario for any ordinary family, testing how far they’ll go to protect each other and highlighting just how easily security can be lost—and how desperately people will fight to get it back, according to Netflix’s Tudum.

Moura explained she was fascinated by the idea of suddenly being trapped inside your home without knowing why. She thought about how her own family would react to such a situation, and that personal connection helped her deeply understand the film’s story and character.

The film’s stars hinted at plenty of surprises and twists to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. The family in the movie experiences events alongside the viewers, meaning no one has more information than anyone else. As supplies dwindle, they must rely on each other to survive, facing an unknown danger that keeps them confined. Actress Lee explained that her character, Ann, uses her maternal instincts to help the family navigate this dangerous situation.

Greta Lee’s Ann’s “Superpower” Is Her Motherhood

Lee playfully called Ann his ‘rock.’ He feels incredibly grateful for the strong women in his life, especially Ann, who is the unwavering foundation of her family. She possesses a remarkable and tireless strength, especially when facing hardship. Lee describes her as a perfect example of ‘hysterical strength’ – that amazing ability some people have to find incredible physical and emotional power in moments of crisis, all driven by love. He says Ann embodies this quality, just like many other mothers he knows.

Matthew Robinson, who wrote the screenplay for Love and Monsters, created the script. Louis Leterrier also produced the film with Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Oly Obst, and Kori Adelson. Thomas Benski, Cecile Gaget, Lars Sylvest, Thorsten Schumacher, and Damian Anderson served as executive producers.

The Last House will premiere on Netflix on Aug. 7, 2026.
