Netflix is canceling a show that tried to copy the success of Reacher. Alan Ritchson’s Reacher series on Prime Video, based on Lee Child’s novels, has quickly become one of the most popular new TV franchises in recent years. Many fans believe Ritchson’s performance as Jack Reacher is much closer to the character in the books than Tom Cruise’s earlier films, and he’s now considered the definitive Reacher. Because of its success, other streaming services have started creating similar shows hoping to capture the same audience.
Netflix’s The Night Agent quickly became a hit spy thriller, similar to Prime Video’s Reacher, and starred Gabriel Basso as Peter Sutherland. Premiering in 2023, it racked up an impressive 133.1 million viewing hours over its three seasons. However, despite its popularity, Netflix has decided to end the series after season 4.
It’s definitely disappointing that the show is ending, especially since the format could have supported more seasons. However, this allows for a satisfying conclusion. Creator Shawn Ryan has expressed his desire to give Peter Sutherland’s story a proper and thrilling ending, meaning fans can expect a complete storyline for Basso’s character when The Night Agent finishes its run.
The Night Agent Ending With A Complete Story Is Better For Its Legacy

Similar to Reacher, The Night Agent started as a book by Matthew Quirk. However, while the Prime Video series has a whole series of books to draw from, the original Night Agent book was a single, standalone story. This means the show’s creators, led by Ryan, have been developing the plot independently, which is both thrilling and a bit uncertain. Knowing they’ve been planning the ending for some time is good news for viewers hoping for a satisfying conclusion.
It’s better for the show’s reputation that The Night Agent ends strongly now, rather than continuing on Netflix and losing the quality that made it popular or its audience. While the third season saw a significant drop in viewers after two successful years, the show’s overall numbers are still respectable. Finishing now, with a satisfying conclusion to Peter’s story, will ensure The Night Agent is remembered as a great conspiracy thriller.
All three seasons of The Night Agent are available to stream on Netflix.
