As a huge streaming fan, I’ve always felt Netflix struggled to build a library of shows that really stuck around. They had some great stuff, but with all these new streaming services popping up, a lot of those iconic shows moved elsewhere. It’s happening again this month with Supernatural leaving. But honestly, I’m pretty excited because Netflix just added one of the most important and best shows of the last thirty years – which is a huge win for them and gives me something new to binge!
Netflix added all seven seasons of the classic show The West Wing on Tuesday morning, giving subscribers access to all 154 episodes. With many popular shows leaving Netflix lately, this is a particularly good addition to their streaming library.
Created by award-winning writer Aaron Sorkin, The West Wing originally aired in 1999. The show takes place inside the White House and centers on the lives of the President’s staff, with Martin Sheen portraying the President himself.
Okay, so beyond the fantastic writing and how relevant it still feels, what really made The West Wing special was the cast. Seriously, led by Martin Sheen, it’s now considered one of the greatest ensemble casts in TV history, and honestly, rewatching it, it’s totally clear why. They just had incredible chemistry and talent.
The show regularly featured Sheen, Allison Janney, Bradley Whitford, and John Spencer. Richard Schiff and Dulé Hill were also consistently part of the cast. However, Rob Lowe really stood out, delivering a memorable performance over his 85 episodes and becoming a fan favorite.
During its seven seasons, The West Wing attracted a remarkable group of well-known actors in guest and recurring roles. The show featured stars like Jimmy Smits, Kristin Chenoweth, Lily Tomlin, Elisabeth Moss, Mary-Louise Parker, Gary Cole, Tim Matheson, Marlee Matlin, Stephen Root, Oliver Platt, Clark Gregg, Terry O’Quinn, Mark Harmon, Ed O’Neill, Connie Britton, Matthew Perry, Christian Slater, Taye Diggs, and John Goodman.
With a large number of episodes and an engaging, yet accessible style, The West Wing is exactly what Netflix needs right now. It’s a bit more complex than a show like Suits, but still offers the satisfying, episode-by-episode viewing experience that many TV fans have been craving. Plus, like Suits, there are plenty of episodes to keep you watching for a long time, providing a lasting value that’s rare on Netflix. Only a few shows, such as Seinfeld, have a similar level of cultural impact and enduring popularity on the platform.
